Your friendly dealer will furnish you with a set of rood bars for 140 quid. Roff bar mounted cycle rack for another 80 quid. Or the towbar mounted bike carrier for 330. They do a hang off the back type carrier as well but will not work with GTI because of the spoiler.

Otherwise, Halfords or Ebay?

I have been pondering this roof rack:

Has anyone had one of these fitted by their stealer? If so could you explain how the bar toward the rear is fitted as on my 3 door golf I cannot see anywhere to mount it? The front doors have like a bung which presumably is where the front rack is attached, but cant see where the rear one is fitted without potentially damaging the rear window seal!?

would also recommend getting some helicopter tape (yes, that is what its called) to put under the roof rack to protect your paint

Also consider whether a rack is the best way to carry a bike / bikes.

I can carry two bikes inside the golf in proper bags with the seats laid flat and have room for enough gear for a week's holiday - no scuffed paintwork and the bikes are locked in the car.

Obviously this doesn't work if you need the rear seats.
I've been a target for 'halfords spec' saxos for almost three years now!

Yeah true, but I got fed up of my back going everytime I had to lift the bike in/out without scratching anything!

Anyway.. good call about the helicopter tape. Had to go all the way to a place in Halifax to get some before the Easter bank holiday. Worth it though as this has definitely prevented paint damage. Ended up getting the VW set in the end, for anyone interested here's some pics without and avec bike...

I think the maximum tube size for the claws is about 80mm... a tight grip on this one, not sure I'd be confident with putting my carbon bike in them though :lipsrsealed: worth checking before buying!
