New to the Golf world - Advice please

Hello,

I've put a deposit on a P Plate VR6 5 door and have some questions before I complete the sale.

Is rust on the Cills normal and is it an easy thing to repair?

Is there a procedure for resetting the Airbag light? Owner claims to have had a problem with the ignition which required taking the steering wheel off. He said there was a simple procedure of which he's not got round to doing?

How often should the Cambelt be changed and is it an expensive job?

Finally does anyone know what a main dealer would charge for a Service and what services there are?

Hello and welcome

To reset the airbag light you need to either, get the car linked up to VAGCOM computer or buy a code reader from ebay. It might be the airbag its self that is faulty and they ain't cheap!!!!   The rust on the sills is quite common BUT, how bad is it?  And where exactly is the rust?  Is it on the sill tops where you open the doors or lower down on the outer sills?  The strip that runs along the side of the skirts is a well known item to rust, is it this your talking about?

The VR6 has a cam chain, not a belt and the chain tensioners generally need changing at 100,000 miles and it is an expensive and very involved job!!!!!  If possible get someone to rev the car slowly up to around 3000 rpm whilst you listen under the bonnet for the rattle. If it's well worn you'll hear it on tick over.

The dealers can charge the earth for a service.  The best bet would be to find a good recommended independent garage.

Thank you. The rust is on the edge of the sill near the centre of the front doors - You can see it when the doors are closed so I guess it is the strip down the side.

if it's just the strip, they're about £25 from the dealership and take about 5 mins to change.

Found this for the tensioners (hope external links are allowed) http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?cmd=print&id=1264409 not read it in detail but it suggests it's DIY but 2 to 8 hours!

I'll get a price from an Indy before I comit I think.
