Mk2 Rear Calipers
« on: 18 November 2003, 10:17 »
Hey peps - I know this is a common problem on Mk2's but I have a '89 8v and it's nearly MOT time i need to cut some corners to get the rear calipers / handbrake mechanism working to pass !

The Mk3 Calipers will need modded to fit, but I've heard you can refurb / clean old calipers for a short term fit. I've checked the Haynes manual and not found much detail so was wondering if anyone can give me some advice ....

PS ... (The actual caliper is fine, it's just the handbrake mechamism)

Cheers

if you disconnect the handbrake cables, you can knock the handbrake rachet & spring out about 1/2 inch, give the rachet a good rub with wet & dry to remove all traces of rust, then drown it in wd-40, let it seep in, then plaster it in grease and knock the rachet back in

you can also use ford granada return springs which are stronger than the VAG items

this is the ford part nums for them
6 141 147 and 6 141 148

if your car has the later spec mk2 calipers with the handbrake cable on the rear of the caliper then yes they are a straight swap with the mk3 calipers

but if they are the earlier calipers then you need to reroute the handbrake cables

Spot on there Mr.Gambit  :D  I would get rid of the old mk2 calipers if you can afford to, the mk3s have internal mechanism and don't seize all the time.

You can buy the calipers in a kit that comes with all the pipes you need, although its a piece of piss to make up your own.
