mk4 1.8 Turbo - Good car?
« on: 08 February 2006, 15:32 »
Hello everyone,

My name is Simon, I am 19 and would like to buy one now as i have been drinving two years.
I have been given a good quote of £1400 fully comp under my mum - elephant.co.uk

Anyone know a good cheap insurer?

I have about £5,500 max to spend and want a good condition Black turbo.

Any advise for me? One thing I have noticed is that all the golf's I have been looking at are have high miles?????

Thank you,

Simon

Personally I would refuse to pay over £1000 on insurance a year and go with a smaller engine car for a few years to get the no claims up. If your going to be insured under your mum when you come to insuring a car later on in life you'll be back to bigger premiums and hassle.

But ...

As far as the 1.8 T goes I find it a comfortable practical car. It's not very flashy and, sure everyone in London owns one but who cares when you have 5 doors, a quiet ride thats slightly quicker than a few other cars.

Actually, how strong are these 1.8T engines? I'm undecided between a GT TDi or  1.8T - I've started doing a fair few miles again for work indefinitely, it might reduce again, it might not, but this is what's swaying me toward the TDi, but I'd love to own a petrol car for a bit - I've been driving a 306 D Turbo for the last 2 and a half years and it's really beginning to depress me how much the thing costs in maintenance and ideally wanted to change by the end of this month.

Also I'm having problems coming across GT Tdi's with relatively low miles... I was looking to pay around £8k, can anyone suggest the sort of mileage car I should expect for that money?

Off to Spalding on Saturday to see if they can help, they were mighty helpful 10 years ago when my mum bought a Golf from them.

Sorry for the thread hi jack!

Cheers

Oh, was looking ideally for a 130ps or 150ps GT TDi, nothing below a 130 if that helps when advising the sort of mileage I would be looking at against my budget.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers!

I've just bought a GT TDI 130. Paid 8200 for a 5 door with 56K and FVSH.  it was the best car i saw for the money. There are lower mileage ones available but i wasn't prepared to travel across the country!! plus the cambelt had been done, it had practically new tyres all round.

If you'are willing to travel then you'll find them for between 7000 and 9000.

See half my problem is I'm pretty fussy - I want a 3 door, pref in black, around 50k miles would be ideal and it MUST have the GTi spoiler... what can I say, I'm young!! lol.

I will travel if the right one presents itself but it's like how far do you go? I've put the boundary up to like 100 miles on Autotrader to see what comes out and there doesn't seem to be anything... all sorta 60k+ miles... it's astonishing that traders are asking for like £7.5k for a car with like 110k miles on the clock, stunning.

Cheers for the reply.

If you mean the roof/boot spoiler, it wasn't standard on any models except maybe the R32. Was a dealer fit option on the 1.4e throught to the GTi 1.8t. Easy to aftermarket fit.

Your exactly like me, I wanted a black 5 door GTI T and I was offering just below the asking price. It took me the best part of a month to get one. My advice to you is stick in there, don't rush and your car will come up. Its a buyers market out there and you have all the cards (or money in this case).

With regards to the travelling, I put 60 miles in autotrader and I ended up viewing a car in the centre of Brumingham travelling from London. It was a nightmare and the car was in an awful state. I would limit yourself to 40 miles as your more likely to know the dodgey towns and areas and still end up with a good deal.

Hope this helps!
