Mk4 Golf GTI 2.0 Engine Longevity
« on: 16 November 2003, 04:52 »
Im have recently been offered a W reg GTI 2.0, a lovely little car, which I am well up for.

However, it has done just over 50,000 miles, which is maybe a little high for its age. I was wondering how much life I can expect to get out of this engine (100k, 200k) as I would be looking to keep it for probably 4-5 years. It has a full VW service history, which I would continue should I buy the car.

Also, are there any comon faults with these engines that I should maybe look out for.

Thanks in advance for any advice

As i said on the garage section, i would expect the car to last 200k with good servicing.

It is currently the company car of a friend of mine at the moment. The car is to relpaced as she has had it for 3 years now, but she gets the option to buy before handing back at below market value. She doesnt want it as she only needs one car, so has offered it to me.

Spec :-

Golf GTI 2.0 8v
Black
6CD changer
A/C
Upgraded alloys
Roof Spoiler
Full VW service history.
New discs, brakes, & tyres all around
52,000 miles approx.

?5995

I thought it sounded like quite a good deal.

Buy it! My Corrado did 200K and was still going strong when sold and that was an older design of engine. A w-reg with 50K will have spent most of its life on a motorway I reckon which is a lot less of a stressful life than an older car with lower mileage thats done short semi-cold town trips. Plus it sounds tastefully spec'ed. Good Luck. (alternative is a brand new Daweoo Matis  ;D - what they call a no-brainer I reckon)

Excellent!!! I had no idea I was in Daewoo teritory with my budget. I've alwys really wanted one, what with there stunning looks and startling performance  ;D ;D

I think I will definatley snap it up, sounds like a good deal from the feedback I have received so far.

Are there any potentail problems that I should look out for in this model Golf with this mileage??

nah not really just the usual mk4 probs that come and go,

1] window regulator clips break causing glass to fall into door

2] rear wash pipes break/disconnect causing water to leak in from anywhere from yuor headling to your boot internals

other than that havent had any probs!. happy motoring
