Can only echo totally what Neaty said....and restoring a car is not something you do with an eye on getting your money back. In my own opinion it is a great sense of achievement to keep an old car on the road that might otherwise end up at the scrappy....if it brings you some enjoyment along the way and lets other people enjoy it then all the better. Of course, not everyone can throw thousands at a total restoration job, but even keeping the car going and putting your own touch to it all matters; If it wasn't for everyone that loves their VW's there'd eventually be no old dubs on the roads (or at shows) and that would be a sad thing indeed!
On a footnote, I bet that guys resto cost even more than 4k but I guarantee you that it will give him more performance, fun and happiness than much else he could pick up for that sort of cash!ÂÂÂ
