He's right...... but if you do want to check it you need a multimeter and the chart (Fig 7-7) on this link -
http://volkswagen.msk.ru/vw_doc/eva2/FU01/ch7.2.1.html
The biggest problem is guestimating the temp of the coolant, easiest is to get the resistance, cross reference it against the chart and see if it looks like a realistic temp for your coolant to be. My ohm reading was 96000, considering the chart only goes up to 7000 i guessed something was wrong!
Or stick a thermometer in your coolant bottle?!

There isn't one for a 16v, only the digifants have em
The 16v does have 3 identical sensors in the right side of the head for the temp gauge, wur and 5th injector I think?

Just got a new airflow meter through the post today, will be fitting it at lunchtime. Looks pretty straightforward but just wanted to ask if anyone knows of things to look out for when doing it. Any tips gratefully received.

dead simple, remove the vacuum pipes on the side, undo the clips, and unscrew the jubilee clip holding the intake pipe on. Wiggle it out, then the AFM is held to the airbox with 4 bolts. Don't loose the o'ring, and refitting is the reverse of removal.
Obviuosly you'll need to re-setup the idle & CO after:

Atfer fitting a new airflow meter, found out it was the temp sender after all. So I now have a spare airflow meter after the garage got the problem wrong (glad they didn't get my money!). Does anyone know how to see if an airflow meter is working properly, and also where to get VAG blue and black temp senders. I'm guessing VW but they're usually expensive.

Yes matey get your blue temp sensor from VW (think it's about £13). I can't get you the part number, I don't have ETKA on this machine, but I'm sure someone will have it. You can buy a copy sensor from GSF, but don't, it's crap and will fail.
