top fill mk1 rad

Hi,

 I've just got hold of an early type radiator so i can get rid of my expansion tank. This will help to clean up the engine bay but does anyone know if this will affect the efficiency of the cooling system? The engine will hopefully be prodcuing about 180 bhp but i don't want it to cook! Has anyone done this mod??

That sounds like a rad off a lesser model (non-gti) so you'll be reducing the fluid capacity which is going to result in higher temeratures - i wouldn't bother myself

If you want to go down that route you will have to get one made for your car or modify a jap radiator to fit.

The early 1600 mk1 gti had that rad in it, should be ok for 180hp when you look at the size of modern rads in jap cars.

  surley it had an expansion tank too though?

The expansion tank was built into the side of the radiator, if you look at this picture of a mk1 with a 1.3 engine, you will see the radiator cap on the side of the rad. (picture stolen off another post  )
