Hi mate and welcome.

Is that the old square shaped 80 Sport? Looks a bit like a Jetta?
Always fancied one of them myself! Did they do a 4wd version?

thanks all.  gibby - thanks, i made the effort to be original so obviously it worked!

len405 - you've gone and got me started now!! yes its an old square shape sport, unfortunatly its white but ive had it a while and enjoyed it, my first VAG so im keeping it (though its seen better days).

in short, yes you can get a 4wd.
from here on might get confusing.

Y and A reg 80Sports are early types, still same 1800 8valve (shim tappets) different dash etc.
B reg to D reg 80Sports had a facelift, 1800 8 valve (hydraulic tappets).

Y reg to A reg 80 QUATTROS are 4wd 2144cc 5 cylinder cars.
B reg to D reg 80 QUATTROS are 4wd 1800 8 valve.  you can get a 90 which is the 5 cylinder.

confusing but the idea was that 80 would be 4 cylinder, 90 would be 5 cylinder.

the trick bits on an 80Sport are the gearbox which is really close and low geared for great acceleration.not much top end though.
plus the 80Sport weighs only 980Kg so its pretty quick off the mark.

Ive also been told the throttle bodies are larger - i have no evidence of this however.

the 80 Quattro (Breg on) is same engine so in theory slower because its carrying around 2 extra diffs and a propshaft, however to compensate the first couple of gears are ULTRA low so that coupled with increased traction makes for lightning off the line.

confused yet? - its only taken me about 2 years to understand it all!

ive got my first question - when did the Golf GTi get the 1800 motor, and was it a shimmed tappet or hydraulic tappet?

as far as i know it was the late Mk1 - but when?

P.S my excuse for not being out tonight is that its pretty minging out and i cant be arsed to go. nor can i be bothered to move the van out the way of the car to go for a drive! - GOTTA be up early in the morning to poach lots of bits off an old passat GL5 at the local scrappies too!! - oo and some audi speedlines i saw there as well! - im hoping they will look cool on my coupe.
