I'm just about to but a new set of tyres for my mk2, but there are so many to choose from. I was wondering if anyone here has any they would recommend or avoid.

Road Champ aren't very good a mate of mine used to run them and he kept getting wicked understeer in the wet.  They bordered on dangerous

Should go for more expensive tires for the ride and handling quality is this true?

I also had Yoko A539's which were quite poor in the wet. I have them to Pirelli P6000. A lot better wet or dry.

I've just had fitted a set of goodyear eagle F1's (?189 for 4 195/50/15s) and they are pretty darn good in the wet and plenty of grip in the dry. Look good as well ;). it all depends on what you want and the miles that you do. I managed to get some super sticky yoko A038s in 195/50/15s for a friends sprint 205 GTi for just under ?400 (it was hard work as they are the standard fit tyre on the lotus 340R and yoko where reluctant to let 2 car sets worth go at once) superb in the dry, but next to useles in the wet!, but if you are after a budget tyre that is good all round, then you'll find it hard to beat falkens.

i would like something that will give loads of grip the the wet and dry (and for track days).  I was looking at uniroyal rallye680,  goodyear eagle ventura or pirelli p6000.
