Gear box ratios....
« on: 02 December 2005, 11:08 »
Ok, my box (ooh err!) crunches into second so i'm going to swap it with a recon one at some stage. However i'll have a new job from next sept which will involve alot of motorway driving. So my question is :-

1. Which gearbox would give me the longest ratio in fifth? I know i'll probably lose acceleration but fuel economy is paramount.

2. Am I right in thinking that a gearbox with the lowest final drive and lowest 5th ratio will produce the lowest revolutions of the engine?

Its an 8v digipant 90

Just one other stupid question - there aren't any 6 speed boxes that would fit are there

6 speed box you are going to pay the earth for something you do not need.

Get a box with code ACD, gives a long final drive and nice cruising speed on motorways.

Thanks for all the replys lads.

I've had a look at the the gear ratios on the sirrocco website and the ACD box has the same ratios as the box i've got in there at the moment -an AUG.

The highest 5th gear ratio is 0.75 (My AUG is 0.89) so if I can find a, AON, ATH or ACL box then i'm laughing. A mate mentioned that those boxes have been known to be in the 1.8 driver etc. Not sure but i'll get down my scrappy and see whats on offer.

Has anyone got one of those lower ratio boxes in thier GTi by any chance?

At 3000 rpm, i'm running at 61 mph or so, but the lower ratio ones could give me 72 mph - Nice comfy motorway cruising!!

Try putting Redline MTL in your box, has been known to fix/reduce 2nd crunching :)

Cheers Rubjonny i'll try that, cos its a pain in the a**e!

One other question :-

Has anyone put a box from a Mk3 1.8 into a Mk2. I say this as my local scrappy has a mk3 with an ATH box which according to the Sirrocco website has a long firth gear? The box looks identical as far as I could see - it was a K plate so not much newer than the last mk2's.

I've read about people switching mk3 2L bottom ends into mk2's, so am i right in thinking that the box would swap straight over too? :undecided:

If it can be done I'd be laughing!
