Not really the place but thought i would ask anyway!

Has anybody ever thought of using car audio speakers linked up to their home hi fi

I am thinking of making a sub woofer and have researched some speakers and they are well dearer than car stuff!
Cant see any reason why ya cant they work on the same principle ohm's etc.

main problem being is that you need a set of transformers to run it all, as 240v is mighty high, and the current rating is far too high for car comps in a house.

You say you have looked at house audio stuff and its much clearer? Or do you mean car audio? House audio stuff, have you looked on any sites like superfi.co.uk, or hifibitz.co.uk? They have some top quality stuff at very very competitive prices. I can help you out to a point, but then my knowledge is not as extensive as i would like.

Speakers dont run on voltage!

I am thinking of running car sub woofer speakers off my home hi fi amp.

Expense was my main concern. The only places I knew of want extortionate money just for speaker units!

If I decide to go that way the main problem will be crossovers.

i know they don't but what i mean is how are you going to get an amp to deliver a charge to the speakers when the rating is going to blow them straight away. It's a problem that a few people have tried to overcome with varying success. I mean by all means go for a car system to your home hifi, but i would seriously look at the sites i mentioned as the home systems if set up correctly will blow a car component away each and every time.

No good mate!

They only sell ready made stuff! I want just the speaker units themselves so I can build it into a unit!
May sound daft but I'm thinking of making a heavy duty coffee table, very heavy with a concrete base!

watch for a potential resistance rating difference in home and car speakers.

Most home speakers = 8ohm.

Car Speakers = 4 Ohm

Component speakers for the home can be got from RS or Maplin.

Both car subs I have bought had 8 ohm and 4 ohm ratings I thought! better have a better look and have a look at my amp ratings!

Have heard of RS, thought they were more electrical component suppliers! But cheers i'l have a look.

simply... car speakers fill a space of a few tens of cubic feet, home speakers more hundreds... as far as I checked last they just didn't work as well

I know what you mean about making your own boxes, but in order to get the best sound you are going to need (as dom has said) to work out the cubic feet needed to house each one. They come in boxes already because of this. I know it's your idea and you wanna do it, but maybe it would be easier to make it a comp set up than to build from scratch.
