Petrol Smell in Hot Temps
« on: 04 August 2026, 17:15 »
I need some help diagnosing an issue. I'll just describe the symptoms and see what you all think...

Very strong smell of petrol in very high ambient temps (35-40c).
Appears to go away at lower temps, less than 25c
Seems to be worse after a drive, not so bad when it's been parked up
Smells strongest around the rear RH side near the wheel and filler area.
Not so strong inside the car, no smell under the bonnet
No running issues, economy seems normal
No sign of any leaks onto the ground under the car

The problem I have, is that it isn't often hot enough here to replicate the problem, so it might make diagnosis difficult. I am tempted to ignore it, but I know it'll come back to haunt me in the next heat wave or when I go on holiday again next summer.

I would guess a fault with the evap system, possibly a blocked or leaking canister.

I used to get similar when I really brimmed the tank, apparently makes the evap system less effective? Stopped brimming, just fill to 2nd click and problem went away. This was in cold temperatures though.

I'm not one for brimming the tank, I just stop at the first click.
