Mk8 golf gti - P210100 fault code
« on: 08 June 2025, 14:59 »

Hi all very new here and a first time gti driver , had my car 1 year 2021 plate golf gti
Love my car , but on Friday car broke down and went into limp mode and will only run at 1500 rpm
Diagnostic machine is coming up with P210100 - throttle / engine speed control module , has anyone had any issues with this ? I’ll probably have to put car into vw but a bit scared on costs etc , unsure if this is something that could be fixed by an independent vw specialist ? Any advice greatly appreciated, I’m Glasgow based

That is a non manufacturer specific generic code I believe, so may be wise to scan with a professional tool, but could be due to the PCM control module seeing a difference between the throttle body butterfly and the actual throttle pedal position, possible carbon build up on the throttle body (unlikely if that age and not high mileage), or one of those parts being faulty!? Might be possible to carry out a throttle body reset/relearn basic setting procedure to the throttle body, but it is possible (although rare) to make things worse doing this if the butterfly has heavy carbon deposits. Could also simply be caused by a dirty or faulty MAP sensor, may be worth removing the map sensor and checking if it’s clean.

As with all of these things, its sensor driven fault detection.

Which could mean its a fault detected by the sensor or the sensor being faulty and reading it wrong

I've not seen any car sensors having fault detection on them (like you see on more critical stuff like aircraft or nuclear power stations...) so they can and do often deliver false diagnostic info...

Hi guys thanks for info I had thought the map sensor or pcm after doing a bit of research online , car has went into vw this afternoon so I’ll wait to hear from them , just wanted my car back on the road , and performing as it should.
I’ll update more once I know what issue.

So after sending car to vw on Friday I got the call today telling throttle valve needs replaced at a cost of £1256.00 , I have no choice but to proceed with required work , but what I will say is this may force my hand to sell car as it doesn’t fill me with confidence that a £30k car that rolled off the production line in may 2021 so is just 4 years old with 34,000 on the clock and needs a new throttle valve ??
Can only put this down to poor build quality or poor quality of parts either way it will definitely put me off buying another vw , as I expect better quality than this and really this is poor for a car of this standard
Not a happy camper

It’s one of those freak faults. I’d be apoplectic too.
VW issue a 5 year warranty in some countries and many in the UK go for an extended cover package.
It wouldn’t be unreasonable for you to ask for a goodwill contribution from VW so long as the servicing is 100% up to date and it doesn’t have stratospheric mileage.
