I doubt if you'll see much discount on a used 8.5 vs a new one (via dtd) because we are in the period where the only ones delivered so far are the initial dealer stock and the factory orders are still on the way.

Oh and don't forget the luxury car extra road tax also applies for all owners until five years

So I am thinking of buying a used one, but there are not many around. I do like the oyster silver or pure white version with Queenstown wheels. Also, I have seen a few GTis advertised by dealers with 4,000 to 5,000 miles which are only a few months old. Are these worth looking at or are they demo cars?

Any comments would be welcome on my thoughts on what I am thinking about colour choice, black styling and buying a used one that is only a few months old but with 4k to 5k miles on them.

I would be buying it with cash rather than on finance - any thoughts on that as I understand that no discount is offered on a used car.

I bought a used one a couple of months ago that had done 4.5k miles. It had been the VW dealership manager's car so no worries about it being looked after. And I don't really think I would be too concerned about an ex-demo either as they have usually only done 2-3k miles and usually only escorted test drives. You will get quite a saving on a new one (just check on Autotrader) but when I last looked there were very few 8.5's available. Obviously even fewer if you are picky about colour etc. I had to drive 80 miles to pick mine up.

As a used car purchase, you won't get any new-car PCP incentives anyway, so I would just try to negotiate a bit off the cash price if you can. That may be difficult though. A slightly better chance of a discount if you have sold your current car already. In my experience, you will also get a much better price for your current car via Motorway than as a trade-in. In my case (I had a 7.5 GTI), it was £1600 more. Finally, ask the dealer what the car was priced at when it was first registered (i.e. was it more than £40K?). At least then you will know whether you will be looking at a much bigger annual tax bill!

The dealer has said they're looking at 18 weeks but I'm allowing for 6 months and anything earlier is a bonus.

The Mk7 Gti bought for the wife (hence the forum name!!) was bought via DtD deal. Ordered Oct 13 and collected Jan 14.
Spec'd wasTornado red, 18 alloys, heated seats, DCC, rear camera.
Discount was £3700. Price to pay £24500!!!!!
Now easily over £40k. Its mental.

Mmm, but that was 11 years ago and inflation will do that! The Bank of England's inflation calculator says that £28,200 (your non-discounted figure) back in 2013 would 'now' (Nov 2024 is the latest month you can enter) equate to £38,682. So, the GTI has gone up by more than 'regular inflation' but not by that much... scary but true.

I've no doubt your right about inflation but its still a big kick in the nuts and my wages defo havn't gone up that much!!!!

Mine came through in 3.5 months and just picked up in December. I have a few options as well which didn’t seem to slow down anything. The newer ones now also come with the full Park Assist package as standard which I didn’t get, albeit I don’t think I’d use it. I am keeping my car for a long time so was happy to wait for a new one with the options I wanted.

Possible return to a GTi is now a definite return to a GTi!!

Just put a deposit down on a mk8.5 GTi.

This one is 4 months old and a demo car owned by a VW dealer with 4k miles on the clock and it was considerably less than list price.

I should have it by the end of the week or early next week, can't wait. The only thing that I am nervous about is that I have never driven an automatic or DSG before As my previous GTi's and R were manuals. As I am 64 years old, I hope it's not too late to learn!!

64 is no age at all, just a lad!

My present car was my first DSG or indeed auto.  Lots of different things to learn…….or just stick it in D when feeling lazy.

I have never tired of learning how to get the best out of DSG and am an enthusiastic user of the paddles and/or the flick into S and/or M as a means of controlling the car……not just for squirting past people.

When asked, I tell people I prefer DSG about 80% of the time over manual and that’s good enough for me.
