Yes, I’ve owned both manual and DSG examples and fitted the same footrest into 5x mk7’s and 2x mk8’s - the original plastic OEM DSG footrest is significantly wider than a manual version.

That’s interesting, if that’s the case how do these Chinese footrests sit over the top of the standard one, or does the standard one come out first?

Are they all generally the same quality, you’ve got good experience on these, which one is the best fitting Exonian?

Yes, I did mean the front engine cover. I fitted one around the time that I bought my Audi 12v chrome plug and my vRS footrest. It’s the little things!

And lifting the bonnet of a 7.5 you see a main engine cover that is a thing of beauty, (if that’s your particular kink). Open the bonnet of a Mk8?….not so much. It’s just a generic piece of plastic.

The point of any GTI is not just the performance or handling, it’s the little aesthetic things that make you smile…….or it should be.

Anyway, GTI rant over. I’m off to polish my engine cover.

I bought a manifold cover for mine, looks mint. The missus shook her head in despair when I showed it to her😂

Ah ok, I also added one of those manifold covers to my Mk7 GTI, fitted the aluminium footrest to it too, will probably add the footrest to my 8.5 if I can find a reasonably priced good quality one.

So, the front engine cover or manifold cover was standard on the Mk7 and deleted from the 7.5.

One had to wonder
A : why VW fitted it originally and
B : why they deleted it

It costs £60 to £70 to buy this simple piece of plastic but ordering and fitting half a million would have cost VW literally pennies on a car with a list price of over £30K.

If it was good enough to fit in the first place then for goodness sake why not leave it in the spec???

At the risk of making your blood pressure even worse, the penny pinching goes even deeper, from the small but significant like deleting the under seat drawers and glove box lock to the the super stingy when they removed the tiny plastic trim triangles from the door mirror attachment bolts leaving them uncovered - that last one must’ve been literally tuppence per unit saved.

Yes, I’ve owned both manual and DSG examples and fitted the same footrest into 5x mk7’s and 2x mk8’s - the original plastic OEM DSG footrest is significantly wider than a manual version.

The Chinese footrests replace the original plastic ones, they don’t cover them.
One bolt and some push in clips is all it takes, literally a ten minute job once you’ve found the torx bit at the bottom of your toolbox.
Quality wise I’d imagine they vary. I’ve used the same footrest over and again in each subsequent car. It’s got to be ten years old by now I’d think. Every time I change car I spend ten minutes swapping the footrest back over. Mine looks a bit ‘used’ but still pretty tidy all things considered.
The fit isn’t as perfect as OEM, it takes a bit more jiggling to seat it correctly, but that’s just mine, I’m sure most fit much better.

I can vaguely remember reading many years ago that the manifold cover was deleted as there had been a few instances of it coming detached from its mounting points, making it a safety (fire?) risk. However, if that’s the case then why is it still available to buy?

More penny pinching on the latest Polo GTI land presumably all other VW’s - not just the Polo; the engine compartment and underside of the bonnet are left in a grey primered state and no longer painted body colour. Can be seen on the screenshot below - red offside front wing, inner wing and underside of bonnet in grey primer saving VW a couple of £’s on paint costs.

I’m currently driving a Kings Red 24 plate Taigo Rline as a courtesy vehicle, I was surprised to find that the underside of the bonnet is fully painted, as are the suspension turrets and bulkhead, but only the upper part of the inner wings.

Ok great that all makes sense, thank you Exonian
