Where’s the Silver?  Looks so good in UK light.  Long overdue for a return to fashion!
Silver & Black. Proper Silver tho, not Oyster Silver or whatever they’re calling it now.
(Remember when nigh every car sold was Silver, haha?)

I had one in that colour, and in pristine condition and under the showroom spotlights/sunny skies I agree, but on a dull grey day (i.e. most of the time) not so much.

Still a lovely colour though.
yeah the drawback is that it's a perfect-looking colour only when completely clean. Some dust & rain makes it every other grey colour, unfortunately.

That’s much the same with Kings Red, unless spotless it looks pretty meh! In my opinion. I’ve owned several carbon steel grey GTIs, and if Dolphin is anything like those were, they won’t look too bad when dirty, having now seen crystal ice blue in person, I’d say it will probably be one of the easiest colours VW offer to maintain, much like my old storm bay metallic M135i, it won’t show any swirls and will be very forgiving.
Current -
8.5 GTI, Dolphin, Pan roof, Area view, DCC, Queenstown wheels, HUD, HK, Spare wheel.

Gone -
2022 Mk8 GTI DSG, Kings Red.
2020 BMW M135i xDrive, Storm Bay Metallic.
2016 Mk7 GTI DSG, Carbon Grey.
2010 Mk6 GTI Manual, Carbon Grey.
2009 Mk6 GTI DSG, Black Pearl.
2008 Mk5 GT sport DSG, Glacier White.
2003 Mk4 R32, Reflex Silver.
2002 Mk4 GTI, Indigo blue pearl.
1991 AX GT.
1984 Mk1 XR2.
Plus many more.

Shame they now do so many flat, dull looking colours and stop doing Tornado red.

So many manufacturers now seem to offer so many grey colour variations and not  lot else.

Agree; colour choices invariably comprise different shades of dullness. Maybe that’s what the majority of customers want? VW have tried some more vibrant colours in recent years but they seem to have had a relatively short lifespan - e.g. Turmeric Yellow on the mk7 Golf, Energetic Orange on the current shape Polo. The Spektrum colour range - comprising 40 customer colours - was also offered in the North American market on the mk7.5 Golf; it wasn’t cheap though - back in 2019 it was a $2,500 extra cost option (would probably cost $3k now if it were still offered).

I can remember back in the 1970’s / 1980’s Ford having some very bright colour options on the mk2 Escort Sport and RS performance models; Ford offered their ‘signal’ colour range that included orange, yellow, and a very vibrant green. There was also Olympic Blue which I think may have been a signature colour for the mk1 Escort RS1600 and RS2000.

Back to the 2020’s; Renault seem to be a little braver with their colour options on their smaller cars than some car manufacturers (IMHO bright colours tend to work best on small cars). There’s a bright orange option for the Clio and on the forthcoming Renault 5 EV, you can have yellow and bright green. I’ve also seen pictures of the forthcoming high performance Renault 5 Alpine A290 EV in quite a vibrant bright blue, similar to Ford’s Olympic Blue of the 1970’s.

2011 mk6 Golf GTD; Carbon Grey

How about the powder pink BMW i7 that lives near me???

It seems wealth is no signifier of taste.

I love VW Reflex Silver. It suits the chiselled lines of their cars so well. I could never understand why they deleted it when changing from the Mk 7 to 7.5.

When I raised the topic I was left with the impression that it was an unfashionable choice. Who knew?

I think Silver is back for the 8.5 which goes to show that if you live long enough, flares and kipper ties will become cool again. Good job I hung on to mine.

Reflex silver was an option on the MK8. I have one! Agree it suits the car's lines, it always looks very smart and it's easy to live with. Low maintenance.

That dolphin grey CS posted above looks sensational in those photos! But I've seen many VW's in that colour and it tends to look quite dull and flat to me. Goes to show the huge difference lighting makes.

I saw a Mk7.5 GTI the other day in TR.... i did think its a shame its no longer an option as it really did look amazing.

Kings red is such a disappointment.

If you enjoy keeping your car clean, which many enthusiasts do, then Kings Red with the black styling pack and 19” wheel option would look nice.
When I picked up my Golf there was a Dolphin Grey Clubsport in the showroom with polished face Estorils which did look really nice under the showroom lighting not dissimilar to that 8.5 Clubby at Autostadt. The red highlights really popped against the darker grey paint, but personally I’d still go for Moonstone I reckon.
In fact I’d actually go for pure white again as it’s free and looks great on a Golf (fact not opinion  ) plus hides light swirls best.
Maybe on a Clubsport I’d go for the Ice Blue as that would work well with the gloss black but I don’t think that colour would work quite as well on a GTI with the matte plastic trim.

I think it was you Mr Ex many moons ago that made the point about VW showcasing white mk7 GTI’s at the launch of that car. Pure White showed off the lines of the car to good effect and contrasted very well against the red and black accents. Black certainly wouldn’t have worked as well.

As you’ve said, white hides light swirls, it’s also easy to do DIY stone chip repairs and the results are pretty much undetectable, and it’s an easy colour to match if you ever need paint repairs. The only real downsides IMHO are it may look dirty sooner than some other lighter metallic shades, and it shows tar spots, although tar spots are easily sorted with a decent tar removal product 🙂.

Yes, that was me back in 2013 boring everyone to death with my opinion!
And indeed as the order books opened back then I duly ordered a 3 door GTI PP and paid £250 extra for the white paint.
Oddly exactly 10 years and two months after receiving that car I took delivery of a pure white R and waved goodbye to a pure white Clubsport both of which have had stonechips touched in with VW touch up paint acquired for that 2013 GTI! The colour still matches almost perfectly.
