Replacement alloy
« on: 19 January 2023, 20:21 »
I’m in the market for a replacement alloy and tyre after my wife gouged them on a country road tonight.

Anyone know what I’m looking at for cost of a new Richmond?

I'd imagine there must be lots of barely used ones as lots of people on here have swapped them for alternatives.

Most of those will be full sets though and finding someone who'll sell a single wheel could be the difficult bit.   I'd say £250 or less could get one.

Had a chance to inspect the damage in daylight.

Alloy has seen better days and there’s a gouge out of the sidewall.  I’m assuming this will be ok to get somewhere to get the tyre sorted but not much else.  Could have done with a spare!

This may also seem like a daft question, but given the damage to the sidewall, I'd like to get the tyre replaced especially if I need to wait a bit for an alloy refurb or replacement.  Can I just get a new tyre put on that rim despite the damage?

Not a daft question at all, rather a very sensible one.

Yes you can get a new tyre on the alloy, it's just cosmetic damage to the alloy. The tyre not so much. Although it would probably be fine to drive on, as there doesn't appear to be any reinforcement protruding you're better safe than sorry.

If you're going down the refurbishment route, see if the refurbisher has a spare alloy lying around they may let you borrow it during the refurb process.

If you are going down the refurbishment route, I cannot recommend Lepsons highly enough. They did two of my 19" Brescia's on my previous GTI, and if anything they were better than factory new !

Thanks.  A bit far away from me, but there's a couple local in Milton Keynes that I'll check out.

New tyre going on Sunday.

The tyre is still perfectly serviceable as has been said.
One idea might be to purchase a second hand wheel from any Golf or closely related car to run whilst your wheel is away for repair. That extra wheel could come in handy in the future too.
