For me the the Mk7 is great but the very first thing I noticed coming from a very long time of ownership of a Mk5 were the doors, every day the solid driver's door 'clunk' of a Mk5 compared to my rather light and maybe 'tinny' Mk7.

2019 Golf GTI PP DSG, Isaac Blue, TCR spoiler.

Another ex-mk5 GTI (stage 1) and Golf 7 R owner.

Poverty spec isn’t exactly full on poverty so don’t get hung up on extras. They drive the same whether the first owner spent £5k in extras or was as stingy as me! Especially on a 7.5 model, all the best things came as standard with the exception of Pretorias (which can be added afterwards). Buy on condition only as many previous owners/keepers are/were onanists so plenty got dinged, hammered, stolen or any mix of those. But there are also a lot of very well looked after R’s about as they attract some err… “varying types” of owner. Some look like they lick the underside of the car clean every other day.

Every post I learn a new word from you Exonian, sort of wish I didn't know onanist now

I'd argue similarly but wouldn't recommend the 7R to anyone but it's each to their own, the GTI PP is a great move for most coming from a mk5 gti, but the TCR is the ultimate form of the mk7.

I'm sure that will attract some fire from those with a Clubsport S, but they're not quite everyday friendly or even the same price range now.

willni, the practical limitation of the CS-S, is why the regular 3 door, manual CS with buckets & Dcc comes in to take the crown! :)

The only reason I didn't specify the regular CS is because there's a strong love for the 7-speed dsg across the forum, manual CS would be for me maybe not the buckets though I've seen how the mk5 leather recaros  age and it would drive me nuts!

Hey all, I pulled out of the R deal as found a GTI Performance with features such as sun roof and leather seats with nicer alloys instead, £500 less too.

Said it was worth looking at the gti for options. Enjoy
Mk6 GTI Carbon Grey, 2010 Bluetooth and voice fitted, a few VCDS mods still a comfortable family car. Red Scirocco 2011 twin charger stage 1 - enjoyable drive now gone.  White 2016 Polo GTI (roller skate on steroids) replaced with an Indium Grey 2019 7.5 GTI PP.
