As these cars are around £40k, I can't help but feel 19" & DCC will be seen as "essential" options on these cars in the secondhand market?
I do appreciate most cars will probably be bought on PPC type deals so the underlying monthly cost will be the major factor?

Essential for some, but secondhand cars sell much the same as new ones - nobody cares much about options or even spots them.

Mileage, condition, colour, distance from buyer and price.... all of those come before options in 2nd hand cars. Most will give up hunting for a specific option long before deciding to buy that one perfectly optioned car 500 miles away.

I have a question around the 18"/ 19" wheel choice. As it looks from the configurator, if you choose either 18 or 19" wheels you get different suspension. I wonder how that will affect cars that are ordered with 18" standard wheels, but are upgraded to 19" wheels after delivery.

Always was the case though - even with factory 19's - you got a car setup for whatever and then you slapped the wheels on.

Sub optimal? For sure.

At least now they are factory tuning it for 19's.

I’ve noticed too that with factory 19’s they add on little black “winglets” (not sure what else to call them) on the wheel arches. Not sure of their purpose...

In what way is the factory suspension on a mk7 ordered on 18's different to one ordered on 19's?

Yes my point - they are the same. And in other non-UK markets, the default option is 17's too.... and UK cars will have been identical setup wise.

I presume it's because of the extra width of the 19's combined with the new suspension geometry means the edge of the tyres would otherwise be too close to the outside of the arches.

They did the same for the mk6 R when specced with 8x19’s and a few other models with upgraded wider alloys too. Not sure if the up! GTI has little spats like those also, can’t remember now

You could always follow Lee at Cheltenham VW’s example (evo1986) and get some original Clubsport wheels fitted to the reborn one.

They’re known as wheel arch spoilers and are fitted to cars with larger / wider wheels and tyres. Their function is to cover the area of tyre tread that might protrude beyond the bodywork when wider wheels / tyres are fitted.
