why does it look like a BMW??

There is something about the proportions of both the Mk8 and the 1 series that make it look a bit SUV like.

I think its to do with the dropped nose making the roof height look higher.

In this particular photo it does look very X5.... probably not helped by the "big willy wing".
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro

Higher waistline and narrower windows don’t help the proportions either. IMO the mk7 / mk7.5 was a much more cohesive design that worked better.

It probably wouldn't look like that if a person was stood next to it or it was in a real world scene where you could judge the scale better - eg on a driveway.

It does look a lot better than the GTI but then at 11k Euros more without options, it bloody well should look a lot better!!

I remember seeing a near £50k RRP fully loaded Mk7.5 R on Autotrader not so long ago so there will be plenty of well spec'd ones hitting £50k and probably over. What a world we live in.

Sure someone mentioned there will be a manual version a few pages earlier but read the evo article today which said:

There will be no manual transmission available, Volkswagen says there’s just no interest for it among Golf R buyers, but to compensate VW has fettled the seven-speed dual-clutch box, focusing on reducing shift speeds and improving response via the new, larger shift paddles.
NOW - 330e M Sport
GONE - 2018 Mk7.5 GTI Performance 5dr DSG, Tungsten Silver, 2017 Mk7.5 GTI 5dr DSG, Indium Grey

If you're going to drive an automatic, you might as well go the whole hog and catch the bus. Wouldn't want one for free.

I really like it and it’s good they have worked on perceived weak areas of the MK7 design.

Found a few old to new comparison images. The MK8 performance golfs look so much better than the other models.

Yikes!

Hey guys, R is now listed on the German website

https://www.volkswagen.de/de/modelle-und-konfigurator/golf-r.html?modelId=CD1RMT%24GRBFRBF%24GYORYOR%24GY5TY5T&modelYear=2021&modelVersion=4&exteriorId=F14+0Q0Q&interiorId=F56+++++OB&option=GPI8PI8&---=%7B%22modelle-und-konfigurator_golf-r_sectiongroup_2031315_featureappsection_co%22%3A%22%2F%2B%2F0%22%7D

Just been looking at the configurator. Well the standard wheels do seem to be a variation on Bergamo wheel.

Colours - as someone else mentioned here or on VWROC there are only 3 colours to choose from Lapiz, Black & White. Really is that right????

In Germany looks like you can choose several different wheel designs, wonder if UK will have that choice

Price is 48,000 Euros and I seem to remember the Audi S3 in Germany starting at this level which Audi UK have S3 at £37,900 so on basic (very basic) conversion maybe UK price around £38,000

Just relooked and basic S3 saloon is 47,169 Euros and in UK price is £38,465. So maybe higher end of £38k
Caveat: I appreciate that you can’t do a direct conversion due to different spec levels it’s just a rough conversion

Crazy money but you can get £5k discount already on the GTi

MK7 GTi
