This is not getting any better, that looks awful, yes the colour and wheels on this actual car are bland but this shares a lot of features with the GTI surely?

This will need some incentives to sell in such a competitive market, like many I am a loyal GTI person but I’m struggling to justify the change from the 7.5 which I believe to be fantastic even against newer rivals.

So what I’ll probably end up doing is visiting BMW looking at an M135i then ordering a GTI because I’ve always owned one (Watch VW marketing kick back, feet up on the desk and the words “I told you so” will be spoken)

Hmm, you could be right about the transport pucks. I don't know, hard to tell. But the GTE does ride on taller springs. Here is another photo but this time on 18 inch wheels rather than 17's and the arch gap still looks pretty huge;

I don't know if its just the colour or because its a direct head on picture but the grille looks totally out of place there.
Almost as if its been bolted on with no design concept.

I'm guessing the large honeycomb structure for the lower grille is to do with the design of those front fog lights. Any smaller and the fog light design would be compromised, and having two different sizes of honeycomb next to each other may also look odd 🤷‍♂️

Not saying either are amazing deals, but this is where the GTE potentially stacks up against the GTi;-

Mk8 GTi dsg on VW finance configurator over 4 years 10k miles p.a.

List price £34,960
Customer deposit £6,000 (£2,500 down payment + £3,500 discount)
Deposit contribution £1,250
Monthly payment × 47 @ £376.36
Total cost if handed back at 4 years £20,188.92 (assuming no equity)

To give that some vague context here is a lease cost for the new GTE dsg from What Car leasing also over 4 years 10k (GTE not on VW finance calculator yet)

List price £35,960
Initial lease payment £1,090.44
Monthly payment x 47 @ £363.48
Total lease cost after 4 years = £18,174

Or maybe that's an argument for choosing leasing over PCP? 🤷‍♂️

That will be leasing vs PCP.

What you also have to consider is that a gte is nothing like a gti to drive . It's not even as much fun as a gtd.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Agreed. If the GTE could match the GTi for driver engagement but with lower running costs, what would be the reason to buy a GTi?

Shame the mild hybrid 48v system didn't come to the gti though. They could have done that...

Looks like no deposit contribution for the GTE, which combined with higher list price and smaller discounts makes it even less compelling for a private buyer.

Looks like i'll be sticking with petrol or diesel for now.
