Diamond cut to powder coated
« on: 23 June 2020, 21:13 »
Too many refurbs to mention so had all 4 powder coated in two tone. Wheels are pushing 7 years old but I think they look good. Not diamond cut but in many ways better.
Hubs and callipers next.

And a front.

They look really good and IMO much better than diamond cut, and they’ll be so much more durable than a diamond cut finish - and no more white worm!. Are you able to post a picture of your car with them fitted?

I wish VW would give buyers more powder coated options - they fit diamond cut alloys to the majority of their performance models, and most of the extra cost optional factory fit wheels are also diamond cut .

The process to produce a two tone powder coat finish must be quite labour intensive though, as it must be necessary to do lots of precision masking up before applying the second colour to ensure ‘sharp’ edges between the two colours. With diamond cut, once the entire wheel is painted / powder coated, the second stage is automated - cutting the paint / powder coating from the face of the wheel on a diamond cutting lathe to expose the shiny metal finish.

I’ll try to post some pics tomorrow.

Not many places can do the two tone powder coating and it takes a while and costs more than straight diamond cutting. Luckily I didn’t need it for a few days.

No more white worm though. Ever.

They look great. I have a stone chip already on a 6 month refurb alloy that has now spread.
Do you mind how much it cost compared to diamond cut and where the company is based ? I think I paid £110 per wheel.  Thanks

Looks like you can see the lathe lines still which is good.

Company was Rolling Rims in Essex. £140 a corner (ouch!). Bordering on new wheel territory but they were brilliant. Wheel gurus.

Just got really fed up of the delicate diamond cut wheels and the dreaded white worm.

They do look good, to be honest.

I know for a fact I'm not touching my diamond cuts ever. On my last car it was 480 for 4 to be repaired ( luckily it wasn't me paying) and after a few months, they were all scratched again and that without me doing anything to them.

As soon as they are in a really bad state I'm buying powder coated wheels. Never been a fan of DC wheels.

Yeah frustratingly I've not been able to find anywhere locally that offers this service!

Me neither. They have ‘bling’ appeal in the showroom if you like that sort of thing, but IMO that’s all they’ve got going for them. The downsides;

- Not very durable finish, especially during winter months on a car used as a daily driver.
- Susceptible to white worm.
- Costly for a top quality refurbishment, and white worm will often happen again.
- Easily damaged by poorly maintained tyre changing equipment or inexperienced / poorly trained tyre fitters.
