Cupra Leon 2020
« on: 20 February 2020, 20:33 »
Don’t worry, I’m not in the wrong forum. I may be indulging in a little blasphemy, however...!  But, for anyone not sold on the looks of the Mk8 Golf, how about this...

Looks better, costs less, effectively the same thing, all but the name. I really like it.

Cheaper headline price, but if you calculate cost of ownership (purchase price minus resell price) , more expensive. That's the curious thing about car ownership.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

Don't own it then. PCH quotes for the Mk3 Leon have been typically a good bit cheaper than the equivalent Mk7/7.5 GTi.

Looks quite Jaguar at the front, side profile of a Mazda 3 and a bit Alfa at the back.  It's ok.

Interior looks ok but will probably feel cheap (always felt Seats have least money spent on the interior across VAG. They usually spend a bit of money making the front seats look very Recaro-esque.

The Seat dealers in the North East seem to expect you to pay list price, so never previously been seriously tempted and the Ford standard door cards and dash have always put ne off.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Having owned a Leon and a Golf fairly close to each other... the differences between them do make a big difference. They’re ‘effectively the same thing’ on paper but the feel is very different. Subtle things like sound proofing, how thick / thin some materials are, it all adds up and you definitely feel like you’re in a more premium product with the Golf.

They both rattle like a bastard though.

The front reminds me of a Citroen DS5.

Agree - but the rebranded Cupra models (which are now a separate brand to SEAT) upped the interior quality a couple of notches. I’d say they’re on a par with VW now.

The wobbly touch-sensitive light switches on the dash are pretty nasty though. But then so are the paper-like plastics in the GTI if you rummage around the base of where the seatbelt feeds out of the floor.

It’s a great alternative to the Golf and I might consider one when the time comes. I just can’t stand the alloys, but I suppose I could have an aftermarket set ready waiting.
