Will DSG pull away in 2nd gear
« on: 19 February 2020, 18:58 »
I test drove a Mercedes C200 (petrol) yesterday with a 9 speed auto gearbox, quite liked the way it would select 2nd gear to pull away if on a flat surface.

Does the 7 speed Golf DSG do the same?

No idea but interested, I had an auto SAAB with Snow mode which pulled away in second. Never used it though

I'm pretty sure it won't. You can't even manually select 2nd gear when stationary.

I could in my Amarok with it's torque convertor auto box. 1st was really low and at a certain set of traffic lights on a hill, as it had no auto hold, it would creep if I didn't have my foot on the brake. To save the person behind staring at my brake lights, I could have selected neutral and used the handbrake, but selecting 2nd gear would mean it would hold without creeping.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Not sure I understand why it matters in an Auto ? In mine which is the older povey 6 speed DSG, it jumps into second gear at about 2 mph and much quicker than I can select anyway.

Have to agree, why does it matter?

If you want that much control over the gear you are in maybe look at buying a manual instead!!

First gear is specifically designed to pull away with the least amount of wear and tear so why would they engineer something to cause the opposite?

Maybe with 9 cogs it only uses 1 for uphill starts? 1st is probably really really short.

That does sound like over engineering though, solving a problem that didn't need solving.

And as others say, its an auto box, the driver shouldn't really care what gear is selected at all, the car makes the choices.

The OP may be wondering how easy it is to drive in snow conditions. It's easier to get moving from stationary pulling away in 2nd gear instead of 1st in snow

Unless you come to a complete stop, mine doesn’t normally go into 1st. Noticed that particularly today using the ACC on the M25 in road works traffic. Even creeping along at 1-2mph it was staying in 2nd.
