Opinion on Alloys
« on: 06 February 2020, 11:48 »
So I’ve never been a fan of black wheels and of course I could just get the OZ’s refurbed a different colour (maybe anthracite or equivalent) but until I decide I ended up buying the 18” BBS SR’s off Andy here.

So what’s people’s thoughts?

I’m kind of torn as think the 19” OZ’s do suit the rest of the car more with the other mods but have to admit I’m liking the 18” BBS’s too.

Maybe the Rays sort of colour if I refurb them:

They certainly sit more flush with the arches too.

Could potentially keep both and use the BBS's as winters if I can convince the wife I need yet another set of alloys

I’m biased Raj, but I really like the BBS SR wheels. They look great on your white car too - they’re good in satin or mirror finish and you know the quality is there. The black wheels look great too btw...

Yeah I'm liking them the more I look at them. I think I need to get some new BBS centre caps though to complete the look. What size are your SR's?

BBS's look great tbh but I like the OZ wheels, the black suits the car I think, I was actually looking a set of those for mine but OZ didn't have stock of the offset I was looking for at the time and ended up going for the Leggera HLT in gloss black instead which I'm more than happy with for now

My 2 pence worth....

OZ look aftermarket and modified which fits nicely with the rest of the mods on your car and the BBS look very OEM+!

Depends what look you're after but to be honest Raj I don't think there's a wrong answer here, both look great for different reasons!!

Same as other guys, its fine margins as both are fine rims, but as its a white car with the offsetting black mods, my leaning would definitely be the OZ, they complete the look.

What size are your SR's?

They’re 18 x 8J (5 x 112) with a 45mm offset. The place I got them from included the metal spigot rings so they fit properly on the hub. I’m running Conti all season tyres on them which have been a great buy in this hard winter we’re not having. Barely had a frost down here, never mind snow...

Mention black wheels and the standard response is “Halfords” harping back to the plague of Corsa boys ten or twenty years ago. Same with black roofs.
Everyone thought they were passing fads and yet the look has endured.

Certain colours of car look really good with black wheels and others less so.
White or red cars definitely make the colour contrast work.

I’ve always thought your car looks superb Raj, the Akrapovic bits coupled with the bonnet vents give a subdued but aggressive look and compliment the other mods well.
The OZ’s add to that mean and moody look and go with the car’s character.

I’ve long since been a fan of SR’s and had planned to fit them to my GTI back in 2013 but ended up trying something else in the end.
When going from looking at the car with the OZ’s straight to looking at the SR’s the former give a motorsport look and the latter look classier and neither is better or worse!
If push comes to shove I’d definitely pick the OZ’s because they compliment the other visual mods the best.

As an aside, I saw a black GTI pulling into Exeter motorway services about six weeks ago that had the same Akra exhaust and diffuser set-up which immediately brought your donor car to mind! I meant to mention it at the time but didn’t get round to it, too many other things going on!
A rare thing to see.

Thanks and nice choice of alloys. Looks good. Yeah this is why I'm torn as I think the black does suit the car. I'm happy with both hence the uncertainty.

Cheers for the reply and agreed they both look good in their own way. I do think the BBS's are growing on me more and more. Pity one of them didn't suit it quite as much as the other as that would make the choice easier  :undecided:

Same as other guys, its fine margins as both are fine rims, but as its a white car with the offsetting black mods, my leaning would definitely be the OZ, they complete the look.

Thanks. It really is as you say fine margins hence the dilemma. Problem is if I keep the OZ's I'd probably change the colour slightly but if I go anthracite with them they may not then suit it as much as the black to go with the other details

They’re 18 x 8J (5 x 112) with a 45mm offset. The place I got them from included the metal spigot rings so they fit properly on the hub. Thanks for the info on them. So same as mine except mine are et35 so are quite aggressive. LOL at the tyres but they'll be good through this still very cold spell. The Michelin Alpins are working well though so if nothing else I'm glad I'm getting to run them in this weather for the time being.
Of course the other thing is if I keep the BBS's I need to buy new rubber too

Thank you buddy for the lengthy reply.

I know where you are coming from with the 'Halfords' comment. I do remember back in the day my thoughts on it and as you say it's still going strong lol. I think that's in part why I have never really been a fan even though it's becoming more main stream even from factory.

Certain colours of car look really good with black wheels and others less so.
White or red cars definitely make the colour contrast work.

I do think the whole black and white theme I appear to have ended up with does lay itself well to the black OZ's and hence why I'm a little torn with my thoughts on the matter.

I’ve always thought your car looks superb Raj, the Akrapovic bits coupled with the bonnet vents give a subdued but aggressive look and compliment the other mods well.
The OZ’s add to that mean and moody look and go with the car’s character.

Thank you as that really is appreciated. I only intended to go with an exhaust and maybe intake being my daily but I just can't help myself
I do like the look I've ended up with as you say it's a subtle aggression.

I've always been a huge BBS fan and have run at least one set of BBS's on every car I've owned/modded. My record for one car is 11 different sets of alloys over the ownership of the car
I think at this rate I'm going to end up keeping both and so use the BBS's for winter

As an aside, I saw a black GTI pulling into Exeter motorway services about six weeks ago that had the same Akra exhaust and diffuser set-up which immediately brought your donor car to mind! I meant to mention it at the time but didn’t get round to it, too many other things going on!

Ah nice. It's rare seeing one with an Akra as not many are willing to pay the stupidly ridiculous price but finance has made it easier for some to spread the cost.
TBH if the donor grey one had better base options on it I would have just kept it and sold the white one. I was even tempted to swap the Vienna leather and dynaudio etc all over but there was something about the white I just liked a little more.
