They're so much more rewarding to drive than a Golf R, like you say, they're almost too good.

My local dealer has 9 nearly new 7.5 Rs (mainly 19 plates) on the forecourt......but no GTIs at all.
Is this a thing?
The R is absolutely great and sure footed but the GTI on a twisty B road just feels so much more alive!!

Just a person opinion folks!!

Agree 100%, I wanted a Golf R because it looked impressive on paper but after test driving a few I wasn't impressed. The salesman said to give a GTI ago - and the rest is history.

I've been asked a couple of times "when you getting an R" as if I'm in a lesser car because it's only GTI. I'd rather have a Clubsport S anyway. Those that know, know.

I was expecting to get ripped a new one for my opinion on the R vs GTI but it's nice to know my view is shared!! I would love to try a TCR, almost the best of both worlds but I haven't had mine long enough to stomach the costs involved to change and the price difference was just too much when I was buying..... maybe one day!!

Don't know why but the TCR just doesn't do it for me like a Clubsport S does.

Mines a definate keeper. Never fancied the DSG so with no manuals anymore I guess I'm stuck with it. What a shame

Autotrader shows 344 GTI Performance, 133 GTI TCR and 364 R's all 2019. So pretty similar for GTI and R.

wonder how many TCR were actually sold? my thoughts were the Akaprovic would dwindle sales - 400 sold? maybe less,

Don't know why but the TCR just doesn't do it for me like a Clubsport S does.

I wouldn't say no to a clubsport S if someone was to chuck one my way but with my own money.... I want the kit/toys of the later car! A TCR in the solid grey and I think I'd even go for the side graphics!!

You've really shocked me with those figures Jim....I just don't see GTI's on the road (which I like!) compared to the R and as I've said before, I still haven't seen a single TCR in the wild!

Be interesting to know the numbers of each actually on the road because I suspect most of the GTI's made are still on forecourts somewhere!!

OK, as the originator of this topic I thought I would look again at my local dealer.
They have 10 Rs on their forecourt today, all 2019 registered. Mostly well specced.
No GTIs!
I wonder what their strategy is?

It was probably down to the huge demand for the R’s during the mk7(7.5) heyday.
VW UK must’ve ordered in loads in the lead up to the WLTP delays and subsequent stockpiling, as Marshall’s in Bridgwater had well over a dozen March 19 registered R’s back in the summer sat on their forecourt that had a few thousand miles on them, nearly all specced with pano roofs and Prets and very well priced which points to them being acquired cheaply from VW.

When I went in the have a nose at the dealer showroom TCR (which I ended up buying a few months later) I was offered a choice of several R’s both unregistered or low mileage Ex-fleet 19 plate cars, and this was in a very small dealership so I’d imagine the big dealers would have many more at their disposal.

I’m not sure how far dealers and VW UK plan ahead but it might possibly be further stockpiling to ease the demand between the 7 ceasing in production and availability of physical mk8 performance models.

There’s probably a lack of GTI’s available due to less demand.

For most of its life the only real competition for the 7R was the unloved, hard riding, dowdy S3 but now there are new kids on the block such as the A35 and M135i which will dilute the market more but there’s still going to be strong demand for used 7R’s due to its cult status.
