I took it to EH to start with and they ran a diagnostic and said it was a gear issue and because it wasn't in warranty I'd be best to take it to a VW garage which I
did next.

When you change gears it tells you which one you are in or should go to next on the central console and when I put it in 6th and accelerate it high revs and the gear numbers change on the display.

Ya I’m also confused how the car is going down the gears in the centre console. Is the car a manual or a DSG  auto ?? :undecided:

Ok I get you now it’s the recommended gear change thing in the dash. Surely your dealer needs to be sorting this out and not fobbing you off to VW. tile to play hardball with them I think !

The gear number indicator is not the problem. All that does is compare the engine speed (revs) with the road speed. Your engine speed goes up, with constant road speed, so the indicator thinks you are in a lower gear.

What you are describing sounds like a slipping clutch. This can first show itself at low speed in high gears because it is trying to transmit high torque.

It sounds like a slipping clutch but I had that replaced when the gearbox was out just before christmas so I know it isn't that or the manual gearbox itself. The guy who done the gearbox thinks it can only be something electrical/software related since mechanical wise there is no issues he can find.

Drove many cars for years and never had anything like this but it is my first Golf.

Just a thought but I have heard about faulty new clutches, was it a genuine part or aftermarket.
My old method for testing for a slipping clutch / weak springs etc was to have it in 2nd or 3rd gear keep the revs constant and low and then floor the throttle to push as much torque through from the engine and see if the revs climb sharply  in addition to the throttle input.
I really don't understand how it could be electrical , it's a manual gearbox and clutch.
An odd one this given the work you've had done.

There is also a burning electric kind of smell I've had a few times when the air con is on but I don't see anything obvious.

Do you know what a burning clutch smells like?

That's not me being sarcastic - is it that smell?

Here's two videos of what is happening when I try to go into 6th and accelerate.
