iOS 13 Updates.
« on: 28 September 2019, 11:20 »
Started this as a coverall for any iOS 13 topics of interest to us, as there could be a few.

Just discovered that you can now read files via SD card, USB, or whatever. Tried the micro SD card from my newly installed Nextbase 522 dash cam, via a lightning SD adaptor, that I normally use for photos from cameras, and it works! So now you can access video directly onto an iPad without using the flaky app and wifi connection. Well pleased!

Not tried Carplay yet, but I know there are some improvements to that.
Roger.

Apple carplay is greatly improved and now no longer looks like it was designed by a 4 year old.

Yes, album art appears (not blurred), and the whole things looks much smarter.

About my only compliant is that the Artist and track name (be it spotify, Tune in Radio etc), is limited to the 1st line only so quite often the text get's truncated, where as in Android Auto, it wraps around to the second line. Maybe it's a update Apple will include with a future update ?

I presume you’re viewing it on the new default split screen which also shows the maps? If so, just launch Spotify or Apple Music in full screen mode.

Has anyone else had and issue where it won’t read texts now, or is it just me?

iOS 13.1.1 was released last week and 13.1.2 was released last night with a few bug fixes. I don’t recall CarPlay being in the release notes but try updating again then re-test it.

I’m having a few niggles, other than Carplay, most annoyingly with finger print recognition, so guessing there will be a major update before too long. I don’t use reading text, so can’t comment on that, but the Carplay home screen looks a better effort.

Starting to suspect that a screen lockup thing with Waze may be iOS13 related.

the new default split screen which also shows the maps?
Only Apple Maps though.

Apple, once again, render a brilliant new function utterly useless with their narrow thinking. How long did it take them to allow the Google apps to be available on iOS, I just hope it's not going to be the same here.

Selecting which 'default' maps app is used for viewing/opening map links, is available on iOS, so why not on CarPlay. In the UK there is absolutely no practical or valid reason to use Apple maps over GM or Waze.

It’s very deliberate to make it slightly jarring to use anything outside the Apple eco-system. They’ll support it eventually but like to give their own products a head start. Other examples are no Siri support for Spotify (but that’s coming soon), no proper Spotify support on Apple Watch (unless the phone is nearby), whereas Apple Music can store offline music directly on the watch. It’s all about getting a competitive edge and then making it difficult to diverge from their ecosystem. They do eventually come round, just before they start getting hit with anti-trust law suits usually.
