New 2019 Golf R DSG question

Hi all,

I've noticed a few times since collecting my car this week that in Drive mode the gears numbers display in the MFD are shooting up to gear 6 then 7 quite quickly when I get up to around 40MPH so I lose any decent pull when trying to accelerate further, is this normal?

I didn't notice this on day 1 but was driving very conservatively since its my first time in a DSG but now I've hit some faster roads seems the car jumps very quickly to 7th gear where I would expect it to still be in 4 or 5 max.

In Sport mode the gears seem fine and reflect my speed.

Also, another niggle is when starting the car, I have to select ok on the driver profile shown on the MFD (Driver1) to then view information between the rev counter and gear display, I can't find anyway to have this selected by default, is this normal too?

Any ideas?

Welcome to the DSG world. It does try to get up to as high a gear as possible for economy purposes. Drive in sport or manual if you want it to stay low, or get a DSG (TCU) tune

As for the Driver 1 thing, you can set it up with your name. You don't have to press OK either, it will disappear very quickly on its own

The driver profile thing appears and then should disappear after a few seconds without you doing anything or you can press OK to make it go away quicker.

Is there really anything you have setup to show there that you need in a hurry?

Ah I see. I had a quick google on this too and another poster on vwvortex forum had the same question and the answers matched yours too so thats good to know its not a problem, just how I need to manage the gears/acceleration etc..

As for the profile thingy, I will leave it longer but seems maybe I was only waiting a few seconds before my lack of patience kicked in

Just get moving. I don't wait or press ok - there is nothing I need there to get moving and by the time I do want to see that, its gone by itself.

Gear changes in D are very throttle position dependant. Try pinning the throttle and you will find that the car holds each gear longer. If you are not applying throttle, the systems assume that you don’t want more speed and goes to the most economical gear. The gearbox ECU also has the ability to learn your driving style and adapt accordingly, so you should find it’s behaviour becomes more predictable with time. You will also adapt and learn, of course, so it’s worth trying different approaches to your normal. It’s a great gearbox - give it time.

Agreed, the 7 speed is very different from the older 6 speed in the standard GTI, much more adaptive to the throttle and driving style.

But the aim of it is to get into the highest gear for the road as quickly as possible if you are using a light throttle. (will be different setting off on a flat road to a hill). I had a friends 458 a few years back for the weekend and was amazed when left auto that by 40 mph it was up into 7th.

Of course, if don't want that to happen, you could either drive in S or M.

will keep at it with D mode to see how I adapt to it. S mode will be used lots though as its awesome, might be new car syndrome but seems noticeably more responsive than my old R did in Race

Just use the dsg mode that suits your mood. Most of the time I’m in D if commuting, but S transforms the car. It was amazing today on Suffolk B roads but driving down here put it in eco, use acc and it’ll return 42 mpg. Can’t complain.
