And another thing- there’s no difference in kerb weight between 3 and 5 door variants in the mk7, I think previous generations the 5 door was a little heavier.
So the 5 door looks better, better for young and old passengers, easier to park and get out of and better??/ just as good to drive.
So we’re all agreed then, 5 door is best.

No way Jose! 3 door all the way

3 door looks ok. But 5 doors is the reason they sell so many Golfs... so no point hating the 5 door as if it wasn’t for that existing they wouldn’t be making any Golfs, let alone performance versions!

Here’s a snap shot of the split of all hatchback Golfs currently for sale on Autotrader. Almost 90% are 5 door.

Not as big a split if you just look at MK7/7.5 GTIs - 105 3 dr vs 372 5 dr  But it is always likely to be this way as admittedly most buyers probably need a practical car but want it to be sporting too so a GTI fits the bill in 5 dr. I've always been a coupe kind of person from my first car so I'm predisposed towards 2/3 dr, always preferred the look. Not sure where I'd go if I get another new car and there's no 3 dr Golf available. Having said that I didn't take to the new centre dash design of the 7.5 I had last week so if the MK8 expands on that then it might not be for me regardless of the door options available.

True for the GTI.

GTI Performance? 28 in 3 dr and 252 in 5 dr.... so about 90%

Regarding the interior, I do like the 7.5 and think it makes the 7 look dated, especially ones that have the very small media screen.

I’d be surprised if the Mk8 isn’t along the lines of the new Touareg so don’t expect many buttons. Sat in the new A6 yesterday, very nice but button wise there ain’t many!

Power/volume switch and some essentials like traction, drive select and dismist. Headlights are a button not a turn knob. The future is here....!

Great price for the spec.

I assume it's priced so well because it's in chav red.

Chav red?

Strictly speaking, I believe they call it Tornado Red. Hopefully next iteration they'll change the name to the much more descriptive 'Chav Red'.

What makes it chav out of interest? Never heard of a red car being called chav red?

It's quite hard to categorise exactly, obviously certain cars in red aren't chav. A red ferrari for example wouldn't normally be descibed as chav, unless it had been chav'd up, which is unlikely as the average chav can't afford a ferrari.

The GTI is already veering towards being a chav car. It has all the hallmarks a chav looks for when trying to impress their mates, it's fast and relatively cheap, for the performance. and it's easy to pick up after market add-ons from Halfords. Also think about all of the old GTIs kicking around that have awful body kits, lowered suspesion etc. They sully the brand, and push it towards being chav.

This isn't just limited to GTIs, think Subaru Imprezza, Focus RS, etc.

What's makes these cars even more chav? A colour that makes them stand out so they can show off even more, and red is the most common colour that does this.

By the way, I have a 7.5. I would love to have it debadged and wish it didn't come with those awful chav alloys. The problem is, it's such a damn good car I had to get one. My next car will be a Golf-R, much more subtle IMO.

Just my opinion, I understand a lot of people will disagree.

Never known anyone buys a car that they think is for chavs, doesn't like the badges (which is one of the most iconic badges for any car) and doesn't like the wheels. Very strange.

Ps Debadging takes around 10 mins max so hardly a big job!

Well I'll be the first to say that 5 doors look better than 3 on the mk7 shape.

People will obviously argue that but think everyone will agree that the Golf is the best car seen for holding its hatchback shape in the 5 door form out there in market - so you might prefer the 3 door but if have to have the 5 door you would not be having to settle for a ruined look.

My 2 previous cars were 3 door, my preferred, but it was such a huge pain accommodating passengers and the doors were always an issue in car park, and then along comes the MK7 and saved me as can have all the convenience of the 5 door and for me keeping the hatchback looks and lines that like everyone else are my preference,

It's a lease, so I can't do anything to it.
