GTI 7.5 Specification Comments
« on: 31 May 2018, 11:06 »
Hi Folks

I'm looking at moving on a Golf GTD MKVII that I have as a commuter car and have always had a Golf GT-something in the garage but I have some questions on options.

I am going for a GTI Performance but have a couple questions which I hope that current owners might be able to give some feedback on:

- Art Velours seat finish - I rather prefer the understated nature of these seats but struggle to see from photographs what the materials are - the configurator is useless but from forum photographs, there appear to be inset areas in what I would call alcantara. Assume this is what the 'velours' is. How are owners finding durability of the materials? I would seal them with Gtechniq or Gyeon anyway but just wondering how well they stand up to use. Cloth seats on previous GTIs have always been excellent but the tartan is a bit loud for me. Any comments gratefully received.

- Brakes - I was going to upgrade the brakes but there appears to be hardly any opportunity to customise the car on the configurator. I recall on looking at an R a while back, the performance pack allowed for brakes, exhaust and so forth. Are the brakes on the performance model uprated or is this just the engine tune? I can upgrade them easily enough later but OEM is never a bad thing for insurance.

- Colours - has anyone done colour to sample / paint to sample? The dealer I spoke to was clueless and ringing around two other dealers, they're the same. Not being a complete masochist, I intend to keep it in the VAG family so Nogaro Grey (an Audi colour) or a Porsche colour (Grey Black / Slate Grey or Crayon). Just wondering if anyone has done this and what the process is - there doesn't appear to be much information online and aftermarket respray is just an excessive cost that doesn't make it worth doing.

Many thanks

Alex

velour
vəˈlʊə/
noun
noun: velours

a plush woven fabric resembling velvet, used for soft furnishings, casual clothing, and hats.

Thats what velours is...

Brakes - PP or "GTI Performance" already has uprated brakes vs the GTI/GTD. These are similar to those on the R - whether they are exactly the same I can't remember, I know there was a discussion a while back.

Paint - not sure what you mean? Do you mean a custom factory paint job? AFAIK VW UK don't offer this. Audi or VW Germany do if you've got money to burn. GTI's in the UK come in just whatever colours are on the configurator this week - fifty shades of grey or red. No sexy "meteor grey", just boring metallic shades of grey... or solid red.

I'm 12 months in with GTI 230 DSG.

Seats - Mine is tartan so not sure on Art Velours but quite a few on here have them, not sure if they'll be able to comment on wear as will be max about 12 months old. I really like the std interior and no issues with it so probably wouldn't pay for AV and not keen on the leather either.

Brakes - GTI Performance has the upgrades brakes and apparently very good so unless you are taking it on the track not sure there would be any point upgrading further. I recently did 500 miles round wales in my std GTI and never once felt the brakes were a problem - warm weather (20 + degrees), twisty roads, brand new tyres and we were making progress as they say..)

Colours - as far as I know don't think you can do special order paint, certainly not on the configurator and would be surprised if a dealer would offer this option so I'd think you'd have to sort that out after or wrap. Uk colours are very limited - go on the german config and there are loads of interesting (and very expensive) colours to choose from.

NOW - 330e M Sport
GONE - 2018 Mk7.5 GTI Performance 5dr DSG, Tungsten Silver, 2017 Mk7.5 GTI 5dr DSG, Indium Grey

I figured it was 'alcantara' but it's not all the same, the pile can be varied and the make up can as well - it's a combination of polyester and polyurethane.

Thanks for the confirmation on the brakes, the configurator has gone from being quite usable to quite noddy since I last used it.

Yes, custom factory paint job. Other companies in the VAG group do it and they share paint codes. I've done it with Porsche a few times and it takes ages. I prefer flat colours on my cars and the choice is a bit like ordering a Model T. Any colour you like as long as it's...

Thanks for the comments Jim.

I don't have too much of a problem with the standard interior, just wanted something a little more subdued and rather liked the hex grill pattern brought on to the seat as a subtle tie in.

Yeah, I doubt I'd track the car but always like to have decent brakes although I've never had an issue with the standard ones on any of the other GTIs or GTD I've owned. More a question as I remember in the 7 when you could spec the performance pack as an option.

Just had a look at the DE site. If you like blue, you're laughing when it comes to choice it would seem. The pricing is a bit steep on a few of the colours, in the league of specifying any choice in the VAG colour palette. If you push hard enough, they'll do what you want. I just thought they might be a bit more forthcoming with the option. I know that Porsche dealers don't actively promote it as it causes delays in production which means it takes them longer to get revenue in.

Sounds like you've been enjoying the car - anything else that I should know or be thinking about in your opinion?

I have the art velour trim in my GTi pp
It is very similar to the alcantara I had in my audi Q 3 , hard to tell the difference .
I treated it with GTechinq when I got car , 3 months old now ,in and out of drivers seat 3 or 4 times a day
Still looks like new NO bobbling or similar issues ,
you also get a imitation leather door cards and seat backs which are easier to clean

Think the Velour seats looks and feels awsome, almost like alcantara.. I have had mine for 1 year now, and they look brand new still :)

But i am a bit odd..

The brakes on the PP is pretty good, my survived some track time , but i have put Audi RS3-18 brake cooling now to make them even better..

The special color option, is a nice thing. But like you say take probably some time to deliver...

Love the Art Velours in my new GTI but obviously way too early to comment on durability.

I previously tried to get a Tiguan (R Line) painted in a colour from an SE Tiguan... no go. Even though it was the same car, they simply said no. I tried and tried.

Hello guys. My name is Ricardo, I'm from Brazil. Look, I've a Golf GTI MK7.5 and I'd like to shop these Art Velours covers.
Do you know some place that sell just seat covers front and rears?
Because of custom taxes and weight, For me it's impossible to shop whole seats, it because shipping will be very very very expensive.

Thanks for help me.
