Buying a mk7 - Sat nav?

Hi all,

Soon to be joining you on the mk7 world.

I’m confused with sat nav types produced in 13/14 plate cars. Are there3 different types ? Do any of them use your phone google maps ?

13/14 plate cars with sat nav will have either the original (MIB 1) Discover Nav system or the Nav Pro. Sat nav wasn't standard back then, both units were optional extra. A Garmin based aftermarket setup was available for cars without factory fitted nav, this was a dealer fit accessory made by Kenwood.

To use Google Maps from your phone on the inbuilt unit would require Android Auto which wasn't available until MIB 2 units were launched mid 2015 onwards. Same for Apple Maps / Carplay.

The difference between the nav and pro? Is the pro bigger ? Literally only seen a couple on aitorrader with the bigger nav

Yes the Nav Pro is an upgrade over the lower spec Discover Nav.

It has a bigger and higher resolution screen, and a hard drive. Discover Nav runs the maps from an SD card.

NavPro has voice control, pseudo 3d map view, plays DVD's/video files (mp4, avi etc) and you get two usable SD card slots for music (or video)

I have a MY 14 MK7 GTD with Pro Nav MIB1. It's good and all that but I wouldn't have paid the premium to spec it new for what if offers. The voice control would be a nice feature if it was a bit more usable, it's not great. I think Dynaudio offers far better usable value for money for less than half the cost of the Pro Nav, KESSY too and winter pack (just for the heated seats). Thankfully my car has all these extras. If you are buying used like I did and the car comes with the Pro Nav then great but the Discover Nav does as good a job really as far as being a navigation system just with a smaller screen. Saying that though I have found that finding specific places such as business addresses etc. it is far easier to just google them on the phone and use google maps. I thought being able to play DVD's was a great feature when I bought the car - haven't used it once in over a year  I don't use the harddrive either as have all my music stored on an SD card. I believe the MIB2 was a decent improvement over the MIB1 so if you can find a MY 15 car it will have MIB2. The screen resolution on the MIB1 is a bit dated and I believe this is one of the improvements on MIB2.

I think those are the specs for the later models, correct me if i am wrong but i think the discover nav is 5.8" on the 13/14 model.  Pro is still 8" though.

I believe you are correct. MIB1 Discover Media Navigation had a 5.8" screen. Then went bigger with MIB2. The info I gave above was taken from V.W. U.K.'s site so is for the current versions. I understand the specs for MIB1 Discover Media Navigation and Discover Navigation Pro are as follows -
