Hi all. Shock horror....after my recent thread about Diesel vs Petrol and from the other day, about a friend of mine who's changing his GTI, I went into my own dealership last night, and unbelievably, they made me an absolute cracking offer on a new GTI (this is the dealership I've purchased the last 11 VW's from), am I'm seriously considering it (just working things out in my mind at present - but the wife says OK

)
Not going to yet talk actual figures (as the spec is still a bit fluid), but it currently equates to around 17.5% off list. This comfortably beats the price I've had from Drive the deal and Orangewheels, and (taking the offers I've had so far) also beating Car Wow. I thought I'd then get reamed on the part ex price on the GTD, but they are offering me a price that gives me considerably more than I was offered back in December (though Car Wow dealers when I was last looking) and thus results in a tidy amount of collateral in the GTD, which they will hold at the same differential as what I owe over the next few months (so depreciating in line with what I owe only), until a new vehicle arrives (which they are quoting around the 16i-18ish week mark for a factory order - does that sound about right ?).
So, I'm now looking at options and i know these are a marmite thing for some people, but I've always specce'd a car to what I want over the next few years rather than worrying about resale cost.I'm pretty much locked in on the options I want (which I'll keep private - for now), but one that's giving me issues is the Discover Navigation (DN) vs Navigation Pro (DNP).
I know it's a lot of money (£1,325.00), but putting cost aside for a moment, as I've always had the Nav Pro's in my MK7's, I'm wondering what I will miss if i stick to the "standard" Nav. From what I can see, these are things that I know of
9.2" Widescreen display vs 8" display (Nav Pro vs Stnd). Reading the specs it looks like the 9.2" is a much higher resolution (1280x 640 vs 800 x 480). How much better and sharper is the screen or is the smaller unit still just fine ?
HDD to store the maps on leaving 2 free SD cards (as I currently have) for music / movies - whereas in the DN unit, one SD car has to have the map SD card in it at all times ?
I've heard that the Google maps feature has been removed completely (even from the £1325 DNP), so what CAR-Net services now distinguish one from the other ?
DNP (if it's like my Gen 2 version) allows you to play movies (which I do quite often whilst waiting for the wife at the train station), does the standard DN unit as well (from SD cards ?)
Do both units still only have 1 USB socket (what if you add the wireless smartphone charging - does that get you another one) ?
I know that only the DNP allows you to mirror the maps onto the Active Info Display and have both up at the same time (i understand that VW are working on a fix for this for the standard NP ?), but is this something that people actually need to have displayed on both units at the same time ?
What about speed of operation and boot up times - are they better for the DNP or about the same as the DN unit ?
If I've missed anything else out please chime in. As I say, please don't let the price or resale value cloud your thoughts, I know it's a fair chuck of money, but I can comfortably afford it, but I just need to understand if I actually do need it ?
I know this all seems a bit hypocritical of me, following on from my big thread last month, but having seen an indium grey GTI in their car park with 19" Brescia alloys and Art Velour interior, I'm really thinking that life's too short and I really want one of those in my life whist I can. I think the MK7 (7.5) will be the swan song of the 2L petrol engined hot hatches, and I fully expect that whilst the MK8 GTI will do doubt be more powerful, I think it will have a smaller engine (maybe 1.5-1.6 liter like their new WRC Polo), with some form of hybrid technology on board, so it could be now or never !
Cheers and thanks.
