Does anyone know whether a VW dealership is likely to charge to turn off the soundaktor?

As you have a 7.5 though, try just setting to individual mode and turning the engine noise to "eco".

Thanks Fred Groves. I am abroad right now but will ring the main dealer on Monday and see what they say.  Assuming they are going to charge me a small fortune, I will do as you suggest and see how that goes.

Does anyone know whether the "Eco" setting reduces the sound level to zero or does it just reduce it?

Eco engine noise mode is how I run my GTD... its pretty much off. Mind you in "normal" I didn't think it was making much noise (compared to sport), but switching it down to Eco definitely dropped a lot of what I perceived as road noise from Normal... it does just come across as road noise at Normal levels too. Sport has a snarl (ok, artificial and fun sometimes but not for long journeys!)

I don't reckon you'll notice it at all.

If you wanted to completely kill it to zero, OBD11 is probably cheaper to buy then get the dealer to do it for you.

Many thanks.

Is there anyone here in the Bristol area with an OBD11 who wants to earn themselves a few beer tokens?

Just buy one :)

Cheap as chips and in the long run all of the other annoying things you can then fix yourself...

If you're up near Solihull some time I'd be more than happy to do it for you, no beer tokens needed as I drink enough without getting more help

Thanks for the kind offer, IwantaGTI, but I rarely get up to the West Midlands these days. If I did, I would.

My plan now is to buy one and I would be grateful if someone could confirm that this is what I want.

https://obdeleven.com/en/home/10-obdeleven-device.html

The item is shown as an OBDeleven device and costs £39.24 with postage and tax.

I have also seen it on Ebay for £45.99.

There also seems to be something called a PRO Pack which costs a further £21.87 (plus postage etc). Do I need this as well?

All very confusing!

Go for the pro as you don't need to use credits.
