Apologies for the thread hijack but is there any way of parking a DSG without the auto handbrake engaging?

Not that I know of.  You have to put the gearbox into P on a DSG, before you can switch the ignition off, and that engages the brake. It won’t allow the ignition to be shut off without it being in P and therefore brake being activated.

That's only the case if you use Auto Hold as far as I am aware. If Auto Hold is not active (via the button), the Parking Brake won't be applied automatically.

Yes that’s it, as I permanently have autohold on. Not touched the parking brake since I got the car. The two work superbly together imo.

It will engage only if AutoHold is on (both on manual and DSG).
If that's off you can turn ignition off all you want and it won't come on automatically.

Personally I let it clunk, not really doing it serious damage (I've covered 160k miles in mk7s). Wouldn't want to miss the comfort of AH and EPB.

Parking brake is separate to the dsg Park position. When I park my car in the garage, I do so with Autohold turned off, as it’s easier to make small movements just using the foot brake and no throttle. When I have positioned the car, I put dsg into Park and turn the engine off. The car is now held by the gearbox with the parking brake off.

I have had the parking brake jam on if I’ve left it engaged after washing the car.

I was going to say same - I never use Auto Hold and just use the electronic parking brake like a mini manual handbrake.

The situation I am talking about is parked on the level, in the garage, so no risk of breaking anything. I have had the parking brake jam on, due to corrosion on the discs, when I left the car in the garage, after washing it, with the parking brake on. To disengage the parking brake I had to use quite a lot of throttle which, in the close confines of a garage, was a bit scary! I don't risk it any more. The parking brake seems to take a little more force to disengage in reverse than forwards.

On the wider question of the parking brake making a noise when disengaging, I have had 2 Mk7's, a MY14 GTD manual and my current MY16 GTI DSG. The character of the 2, in respect of the operation of Autohold, is very different. My GTD wasn't always totally jerk free on Autohold release, whereas the GTI is very smooth at all times. I'm guessing this could be down to fine adjustment on assembly or the brake characteristics due to material or bedding in. This difference does seem to be a feature of Mk7's, from comments on here.

Without Autohold on I never had the EPB seize up (and the rears on my first mk7 were shocking - on my current one I had them replaced under warranty after a lot of moaning and when BCM died VW threw rear brakes in too to keep me calm), as in that I would have had to hit throttle to brake them free.

Maybe VW have changed the AH set up? I re-coded my ABS so it opens the brakes 'early', i.e. less throttle and this is a little smoother.

But I never had luxury of a garage so don't need to manoeuvre in close quarters (and I'd always reverse park it anyway).
