parking brake clunk in cold
« on: 07 January 2018, 11:07 »
Lately with the extra cold here (nothing too extreme, night temp between -3 and 0 deg C) whenever I set off in the morning I hear a rather noticeable bang/clunk when the brakes first disengage from their parking position. Car is always left at P and with Auto Hold and Handbrake On, DSG6.

I had a DSG7 car before that also used to park in similarly cold (in fact colder) temps during the night and I never got to hear any sound like that. Is it just a feature of these cars? If it's normal, surely others that park their cars in outside places or garages must have heard it as well. Is there maybe something I can do to avoid it like not engaging the handbrake but just leave it in P? (I could do that as there is no inclination in my garage). Does it even hurt the brakes at all?

Mine does it every now & again, mostly if I’ve washed it the day before or it’s been raining, it’s just the brakes pads releasing from the discs I think

Yep, same here as above. Usually after it’s been parked up all night or a few hours after a wash or it’s rained.  Soon dissipates.

Apologies for the thread hijack but is there any way of parking a DSG without the auto handbrake engaging?

I would think it's the same as a manual. Stop the car and turn it off and then turn the ignition on(don't start it) foot on brake and pull the handbrake to disengage it then turn car off again.

The noise is just it breaking free. Hot discs and calipers and water and it's instant oxidisation binding them together. Look at the discs, covered in rust... (gone after a few dabs of the brakes though once moving)

That's right, I've noticed it after washes as well. Maybe applying the brakes hard just before parking helps reduce this? Just wondered how it's different to my DSG7 car that by the way had a traditional handbrake, not an electronic one.

Not that I know of.  You have to put the gearbox into P on a DSG, before you can switch the ignition off, and that engages the brake. It won’t allow the ignition to be shut off without it being in P and therefore brake being activated.

Mine never engages? I never leave the parking brake on in the garage especially if it’s after a wash for the above reason. It will engage if I open the door before turning off the engine but otherwise it doesn’t.

Could this be because I have auto hold off?

Really?  Mine engages when ignition goes off I’m sure and get the red symbol on the dis and orange light on the button.  I’ve not once had to manually put the electronic handbrake on since owning the car.  Will double check next time but away from car atm though.
