Slight chip on collection
« on: 30 June 2017, 20:09 »
Hi all. Picked up the new 7.5 GTi, and it's stunning. Great looking car.

During handover, I did my usual anal check of the bodywork and noticed a small chip in the drivers dooor. It's not huge, probably about the size of a pin head.

Mentioned it to the dealer, and they're going to arrange for a smart repairer to come to the house (the dealership is a good couple of hours drive away), to sort it.

It's a PCP job, and I won't be keeping it. Will a smart repair be ok? Should I push for anything further?

Sounds good to me a decent repair and you won't see it.

What are the alternatives? Full side respray think I would stick with the repair offered.

I'd agree with dereks, it'll soon pick up far worse and that'll be the least of your worries if you are bothered by stone chips etc...

Get the smart repair if it really bothers you. If it's that small, 10 seconds with an artists brush and touch up paint and you'd have it 99% sorted yourself. Don't get the door / half the car repainted for a tiny mark. It would be nuts tbh.

You'll pick up a fair few chips during your ownership of the car; it happens. If the chip really is as small as a pin head, touching it in a Joe suggests is definitely what I would do and move on. I'd avoid a partial reprinting of the panel.

I used to have contacts in the insurance industry and one of the motor claims inspection engineers told me that even with modern painting methods and paint technology, it can still be difficult to get an exact colour match with some colours, especially lighter metallic shades like silver.

When I collected my car, I spotted a small paint imperfection on the nearside sill that can only be seen if you crouch down. Dealer offered to repaint the sill and blend the paintwork into the rear panel. I didn't want to have a large section of my new car repainted with the risk of a shade mismatch (confirmed as a risk by the dealer) for the sake of something only I could see if if I got on my hands and knees, so left it as it was. I don't even notice it now.
