[I wanted a GTi]

Companies like BP, Esso and the so called premium retailers pay car manufacturers to recommend higher priced fuels on their cars. That tells you all you need to know about the supermarket vs premium fuel argument. All fuel is made to a minimum standard, premium fuels have additives which claim to improve performance, reduce wear etc but its all subjective.


Personally I use supermarket with an occasional premium as a treat, seems like a happy medium...

As for your trip up to Skye, a single tank of what you perceive as cheap fuel isn't going to matter a jot, even if you believe the hype.

Have been to Skye on my bike and obviously have no choice but to fuel up when you can. Can only speak for the petrol but didn't seem to have a negative effect on the performance 😊. It would be a shame to go there in a performance Golf and not make use of the fantastic roads.

Having returned today then I can report that there still is a BP as you leave Fort William as well as an Esso on the other side of the road before it (which was very cheap at £1.14 for normal unleaded today). There is also a Jet at Inverinate and then it was just the Gulf and Gleaner PS mentioned at the various locations above.

if it helps, I topped up the tank at the BP and still had over 3/4 left when I got to Portree. I did hit Eco Mode though. As much has been said, the roads are great but currently packed with tourists, campers & caravans at the moment so unable to enjoy unless on a bike.

So Fort William to Portree and back home on 1 tank with an average mpg in the CS of 41.9 on the computer.

Just back from trip to Skye and can report 44mpg on the way up and 42mpg on the way back. Wasn't hanging around coming back either with lots of caravans and camper vans on the road. Almost didn't have a car at all when an idiot biker decided to not bother slowing for a bend and ended up going straight off the road and into a ditch! Also have to say that I love the gti especially on the roads to and from Skye. Never felt wanting over taking and passed things with ease even when I forgot to change down a cog 🙊

Nice, 44mpg.. That's pretty good, looking forward to getting my GTI.. My C Class only been managing 25-30!

Nice, that's quite good mpg. I'm going to take a nice week long(not during school holidays) drive up there when I get my sisters clubsport next year. I haven't been on any nice driving roads when I've been up there over the last few years.
