Poor quality main dealer service
« on: 14 April 2017, 16:46 »
I've had my GTD a year now, I bought it new from VW in Swindon, fast forward 9 months and the coolant level drops for some reason, I book the car into my local vw dealer and they diagnose it was an airlock which had cleared itself causing the coolant level to drop, when I collect the car I'm told the oil needs topping up slightly, which I knew about, so I got some oil and I'm asked if I'd like someone to top it up for me, the service guy says he will do it as we're walking back to my car, he lifts the bonnet and immediately I notice that something isn't right in the engine bay but I just couldn't put my finger on what it was, after a minute or 2 I ask is there supposed to be an engine cover on the engine, the service guy says the GTD doesn't have an engine cover, then I insist it did, I was sure of it, so off he goes to speak to the tech who was working on the car and he then comes back with the cover and is all apologetic, so off I drive home thinking I'm glad I got some oil there as god knows how it would have gone when I'd seen it missing at a later date.

A few months later my 1st service comes up and I drop it off and am given a nice 17 reg Passat, not a bad car as it goes. I get a text later to tell me the car is ready, I check the car for any damage and that the engine cover is in place and off I go, 2 mins down the road I notice the engine management light is on, so I turn around and head back, service guy takes the car to the workshop and comes back 15 mins later and says they had disconnected the power to the water pump and had forgot to connect it back up. I only thought later that could have turned out quite serious if I'd driven for a while and the engine had over heated an dthen I'd have probably had the dealer saying it couldn't have been them that had done it.

Since I've had my car I've not been impressed with either the dealer I bought the car from or the dealer who's had my car in for work twice, also VW's customer service in general doesn't seem to be very good at all, I can only compare them to BMW who are top notch imo when it comes to customer service, any time my car went into BMW for service or warranty work I would always without fail get a call from customer service asking how if I was happy with the service I'd received and I'd also get a call from the dealer asking if all was ok, in the weeks after buying a BMW id had 2 calls asking if I was happy with the car and making sure all was ok, I've not heard from VW once since I got my car which I think isn't a great customer service imo. It's the small details which helps keep customers confidence in a brand imo.

Maybe I'm moaning about nothing but it's just how I feel about the service so far, is that the norm for VW??

Sorry to hear of your woes.

Since ive been a VW customer ( 7 years ) ive always used the same guys for service.

Throughout this time there have been ups and downs ( wrong rear wiper fitted, failure to diagnose suspension and other faults and apply TPI's despite many return visits )

However, i believe in developing relationships and i now have great realtionships within Frank Keane service dept who understand my expectations.

I also believe this dealer network are going the extra mile to deliver excellent standards and it shows.

However, if a few of them left tomorrow would i still be waxing lyrical?

Who knows? After all, a company is only as good as its people.

In fact, the service dept at FK are a big reason why i am wanting to continue being a VW customer its just the fact that VWI have a narrow range of cars and my customer journey with them has hit a wall currently!

Lets see....

Mk7 GTD. Xenons, 18", Climate Control, Keyless, Alarm, ( all optional in Ireland...! ) Dynaudio, DCC,

Do you have another dealer in realistic range? You can get work done anywhere. I think you'd be unlucky to find another that sloppy. In the end, as Fabio says, it's all down to the people, but the buck stops with the service manager and he's the one who wants his arse kicking.

Do you not get an online survey after every dealer visit? I thought that was every dealer. I do, and they have led me to believe that really good results are important to their standing with VAG. My dealer has always been pretty good and I've been using them since 2002.

I have dealt with 5 VW dealers around me and for me it would be hard to pick which was the worst because they have all been absolutely crap. Personally I think they go to the school of how to give bad service.

Not to dissimilar to yourself Spur.

Very long story short. I had a leak in the GTD so they had my car for a week. When I got it back the trim down the side of the windscreen was scored and I had a rather large stone chip. They agreed to sort them both as they had checked the car with me before I dropped it off and "can't be sure it wasn't there originally"

2 months later it was due a service so rather than just the service guy check it over with me they insisted a technician also check it over. Without a word of a lie they both must have spent 15 minutes checking everything. They even noticed the tiniest of dings on my rear door. It must have been the way the sun was hitting it as I'd never seen it before and haven't seen it since. So it shows you how small it was and how meticulous they were.

Car was serviced and parked in a spot on its own and I looked over it with the service guy. Given it had previously been damaged and thy had spent a lot of time checking it over I was confident it would be okay. It looked fine in the 20 seconds or so I checked it over.  Schoolboy error I know.

I came home and decided to wash my wifes car. As I bent down to do the lower part of her car I noticed a mark on my sill. There was a big indentation in it. So I fired up my dashcam footage and could see the swinging arms of the ramp would marry up perfect with the indentation. I phoned them and they chased me. I then phoned their customer complaints section and they said they would look into it. A week later I got a letter saying I left the dealer after looking over the car with their employee so they they are taking it no further.
I told them I had video footage and was willing to go down to the dealership as it was closing or at any time they suggest, put the car on the same ramp and see if the swinging arms match up with the indentation. If it doesn't I'll eat humble pie and if it does then they would be responsible.  The basically told me to "do one"

It was Arnold Clark so a big dealership.

A few months later my wife's GTI was in at another Arnold Clark's bodyshop. That's a long story I won't bore you with but they basically painted her bumper without our knowledge. We thought the spoiler under the front bumper was being replaced but they thought they would do us a favour and paint the bumper as there was a scuff underneath it. The car was only a few weeks old from brand new!!

Anyway when we got it back the bumper looked a bit misshapen as if one of the bolts had been tightened too much and pulled the bumper in a bit. I was told to go back to their bodyshop.
So I spent the morning washing and waxing the car before taking it into them. Took it to them and they put it in their workshop while I stood in the car park as they said it would be literally 5 minutes. Half an hour past and they brought it out unable to sort it. They denied the misshapen bumper was their doing but there was now a dent right bang in the middle of the bonnet. As if someone had dropped a heavy spanner on it.

I can 100% guarantee it wasn't there previously as I'd spent the morning cleaning it and looked it over it again as I got to the bodyshop. I got the manager and his response was "Yeah I seen that dent when the car was driven in and thought why was the customer bothering about a slightly misshapen bumper"

I've never been so livid in my life. I had to walk away and phone my mate and left a 10 minute answering machine message on their phone of pure hatred. It was either that or I was getting jailed.

So as you can see I detest dealers and more so Arnold Clark. Its just the lies they tell. If they said, Look we've had an accident it would be fine.
The GTI with the painted bumper, the lacquer is now starting to peel. I told them the car had been coated in a ceramic coating but they've obviously just ignored me. I'm now in the process of going to a different Arnold Clark bodyshop for it to be repaired. So am dreading the whole affair.

I don't know what I'll do come next year when the R is due its service!!!

Sorry. What started out as a quick reply got my blood boiling again

Having had an alloy wheel damaged at my first service by Inchape Bolton, I think I will be taking it to Awesome GTI in Irlam from now on.
I actually thought Inchape Bolton did a good job up until the wheel incident, but until they sort that out to my satisfaction, I won't be trusting my car to them again.

I have a dealer near where I work but the times I work makes it a bit awkward to use them. I get my cars serviced when I'm off work and it would be a 60 mile round trip if I was to use that dealer, my local dealer is 3 miles away. I might have to try and arrange something and see if I could drop my car off in the afternoon before the day of service, that way I could use the dealer closer to work.

I've never had a online survey from VW, all I've had was a text message from the dealer saying thanks for using them to look after my car.

It sure seems that way, I thought CW would be going the extra mile in customer service as they haven't exactly had the best press in the last couple of years.

I used to drop my car off the night before and pick up a courtesy car at the same time, then return to pick up mine 24 hours later.
