Arch liner rubbing
« on: 17 December 2016, 14:03 »
Strange one this...

Put the winter tyres on back in early November, and there was no obvious issue with arch liner or clearance

The tyres are VW recommended size for winters (205/50R17) on OEM MK7 Dijon 17" alloys so it's not as if the offset or tyre size are causing any issues/

In recent days, have been hearing a sound like plastic rubbing against something when going over speedhumps or under pitch & roll in corners

Had a quick look today and found the cause. The drivers side inner liner seems to have distorted and come away, but there are no screws missing. On the passenger side, the same liner seems to tuck under the arch lip

There is no cracked or jagged plastic anywhere - almost like it has distorted under heat and won't go back into shape. I've also pushed the plastic access panel back into the cut out, as it was coming loose as well.

It wasn't like this when I put the winter tyres on, so must have happened recently

Before I go to the hassle of jacking it up in this crap weather, anyone had any issues with the inner liners coming loose?

Can you not just push that back in?

No, doesn't seem to want to move at the moment

I think I'll heat it up with a heat gun to make it more pliable and try

That just looks like it got caught in something - road debris maybe - and the wheel pulled it out on full lock. A bit of gentle persuasion / brute force should push it back into place. Could try loosening some screws first to help push it into position.

Some careful heatgun application has helped bend it back quite a bit, but will need to wait till the weather improves before I jack it up and see if I can remove it and refit
