Spare Wheel
« on: 04 October 2016, 14:15 »
Hi All,
Not sure if this has been covered, I'm thinking of getting another 19" Santiago wheel for a spare instead of the horrible space saver, my question is would a 19" Santiago fit into the well in the boot???

Any info is appreciated, thanks

At an educated guess I'll say "yes" but the boot floor will have to be on the higher setting.

It should fit - I have a full size tyre fitted in my estate instead of the 16" space saver.
Either a summer wheel with 225 45 17 or winter wheel with 205 55 16 tyre on. Still can use the boot in lower setting (board does touch the tyre sidewall just a bit if I have really heavy stuff in it).

After 86+ views no definitive answer so far.

Why not take the dimensions of one of your existing Santiagos with tyre then 'see' if it fits in the well after lifting out the spacesaver or if you're able remove a wheel and try it as a last resort.

How often do you use the space saver?  Can't remember the last time I used a spare, its not really for looks though, just to get you out of trouble and back on the road.  You are still going to go to a garage in the event of a puncture as you will want the spare space saver or alloy wheel inflated and repaired ready just in case..    So why bother with the expense and removing some practicality of the adjustable boot floor?

Imo

There are situations where I would not want a space saver. On front (with fwd car) you can only drive for so long without damaging the diff. If you brake down at night time you can drive with full size spare indefinitely (even if marginal different size e.g. by using winter tyre in summer or vice versa).

In the last ten years I had 1 tyre explode on the motorway, 1 sidewall damaged to unsafe levels (admittedly this was my own fault), 1 slow puncture, 1 fast puncture and one with long object stuck in it (with the usual ffft-ffft-ffft noise while driving). Never would I only have puncture kit or crappy space saver in the boot.

A 225 xx yy tyre on a standard wheel should fit in the boot floor no issues.

Hi all, thanks for your responses, much appreciated,

The reason why I ask is that I have kerbed one of them and have taken it too a specialist wheel repair centre, that does diamond cutting because not all in my area does diamond cutting as I have found out.

I cant remember the last time I had a puncture, but would prefer a full size spare in case of any eventuality.

How much does it weigh?  This could add significant weight to the car (maybe around 2%) compared to a can of tyre weld.

If you've got access to not only your boot, but a plentiful supply of 19" wheels with tyres fitted at each corner of your car.

Why not take one off and see if it fits in the boot?

That way you can be 100% sure either way and if you can live with any compromises (boot floor in higher position constantly?) that might occour.
