What VW say and what is best for your car are two different things.
With my R I was careful not to labour it nor go past 5000 rpm to 1000 miles and did an oil change then and it didn't use a drop.
Between those lower and up limits it's important to not be too gentle and vary the revs so steady motorway isn't good.
Some sound advice there, babying the car on run in is one of the worst things you can do. Motorway run-ons are also a no no - Did that with a MK5 Golf TDI140 and it was thirsty, sluggish and used a litre of oil every 1000 miles.
Don't race a cold engine, but other than that mixed speeds for the first 1000 miles and up to 3/4 throttle for the first 500 miles. I also changed the oil on my R after run-in. It's more frugal than most Rs reportedly are here and hasn't used a drop of oil.
