I don't get that either? The Mk5 was anything but angular. It was all round, soft curves everywhere and a bit fat arsed tbh with that half painted rear bumper. The Mk6 was clearly more "angular", they put sharp creases on the panels where there were none before and carried that into the MK7.

I much preferred the front end of the MK5 though. In fact I think the MK5 GTI front end is the most distinctive of all the generations.

The rear lights on the early MK6's were terrible. Straight off a Toureag! But the LED versions in the later cars were a huge improvement.

I had both a mk6 and mk5. I preferred the styling of the mk6 and my least favourite aspect of the design of both models was the rear of the mk5; the rear bumper with the large black plastic lower half looked unfinished IOM.

My choice of colour for my mk5 was limited to 1 colour; deep black pearl, specifically to help 'hide' the lower half of the rear bumper. I wasn't that keen on the rear lights of the mk5 either. The LED rears on the mk6 were great though.

If buying now I'd go for a club sport rather than a standard gti. Yes it means you pay a bit more and don't get the deposit contribution but I suspect that it will hold its value much better than the other performance variants. 5 year old edition 35 cars still go for between 13-16k in the trade and more privately. Pretty good for a car that cost £27k brand new.

I did consider that as an option but with drive the deal etc offering 6k off list at the moment inc the dealer contribution I'm not sure the clubsport would retain that much more.

Visited hull today and if time allowed was gonna go see the new m140i as an alternative, some really good dealer incentives on those at the moment.
