Mk 6 Gti - 'return to workshop' fault
« on: 16 May 2016, 13:56 »
Hi There

My Gti has had a difficult 7 months now and there seems to be a recurring problem that the garage it has been back and forth to have not managed to solve or diagnose successfully. 7 months ago the car developed a rattle that prompted me to do a little bit of googling. I was concerned that it could be the timing chain tensioner and I took it to an independent garage in North London. The actual rattle was caused by a valve being stuck open but at the same time they replaced the deteriorating tensioner and the rails in what was quite a large job.

Upon receiving the car back intermittently I would receive a 'Return To Workshop' message that would appear sporadically and then disappear. The same garage have had the car now four times since the initial work and they have not managed to work out what is causing this fault to appear. They originally believed it could be a faulty cam shaft sensor but they have replaced the sensors and the wiring but to no avail. They have also checked the timing and updated the ecu and there is nothing wrong here. I have now been told that they are out of options and I've now arranged for the car to go to another garage for a second opinion this week. The fault is registered on the system but once the fault is cleared it could be one mile or thirty before it appears again. The garage are convinced they have done everything they can to make sure it is fixed but they have had no luck.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience or can they shed any light?

Thanks.

Certainly mate - have you changed your timing chain tensioner recently ? im guessing you did this before the chain slipped ?

I think VAG Dad might mean timing chain when the tensioner and rails were changed. The chain can stretch and may be the cause of intermittent error codes.
