Hi all just a quick one when your buying a new golf whichever model when you see the " on the road " price or haggle out a deal where the tax isn't mentioned do vw provide any period of tax or is that down to the customer to tax upon collection.....

For new cars this is included as a dealer has to register it and pay a different fee for the 1st year I believe.

Yes, on the road price is what it says. Used to be that you had to be careful what was included, but, as Peter said, there is a first registration fee to pay as well, so the otr price includes that, the first years road tax, delivery, pdi etc. Think it's detailed in the configuration pages somewhere, if you want more detail.

Other things you do need to mention at some stage are fuel, flaps (if required) and a servicing package, as they are generally good value.

If you look at the brochure or documentation online it will have a breakdown something like this: (This was for a Mk6.)
This is included in the price of the car and is entirely the dealers responsibility.

Additional ‘On the road’ costs

Delivery to retailer £ 410.00
Number plates £ 20.00
VAT £ 75.25
Vehicle first registration fee £ 55.00
Total £ 560.25

On the order form for my Golf R, it states under "Sundry Items'", "Road Fund License (12 Months)" = £185.  Then under that it states "First Registration Fee" = £55.  It appears the Road Tax is called "Road Fund License" on the purchase order and as others have already mentioned the first year is paid for as part of the initial order for a new car.  Hope this helps

Happy update
Dealer rang me this morning to confirm that they do pay the tax it's just a form the customer has to sign to authorise them to do so
