I ordered a Clubsport and I'm not pee'd off in the slightest.

I could of got an R for less money (same options) but wanted a GTi.

The Clubsport S is a track based car, but I wanted a road based car as I have a dedicate track only car.

I'm happy to have a GTI

Granted its a small niche between them all now, but its a niche none the less and they will sell all I am sure.

Dave

I am in the same situation (ordered a clubsport) and I fully agree.
The only thing what I wonder: would VW not consider to keep the CS as a seperate series? Maybe that is the reason why it's not called "edition 40"... If they see it's profitable...

VW Press release about forthcoming Worthersee release...

"Mk7 Golf GTI / 2012. The seventh generation of the GTI launches in 2012 with two levels of power output: 162 kW / 220 PS2 from the base version and 169 kW / 230 PS3 from the Golf GTI Performance, the latter being equipped with a new front-axle differential lock. Based on this model there then follows in early 2016 the Golf GTI Clubsport, delivering via a boost function up to 213 kW / 290 PS. It blurs the boundaries with motorsport. The special edition of the Golf GTI Clubsport being unveiled in a few days' time on the shores of Lake Wörthersee will now break them down."

Makes sense in some ways, they have cut the R400, and now all the stuff that is not standard on the clubpsport, bucket seats, prets with Cup tyres can now be standard on this with a higher engine PS and price tag.

Wonder what the R owners are going to make of this....

Bang on.
If the regular Clubsport had half a climbing frame in the back I'd have probably gone for a GTI PP.

I would imagine an R owner isn't bothered in the slightest - the Clubsport S is a stripped out car with no back seats, air con etc - its pointless as a daily drive.

Correct, I'm getting the Golf R for it all year all weather ability, as a daily car it'll be the better option than the Clubsport / S as my standing GTI PP struggles to put the power down in anything but dry weather. Imagine 265/290/306ps via FWD.

Mk2 Rallye and mk3 vr6 owners weren't too bothered about the g60 limited were they? That was the king of the castle until the r32 could beat it's power output over a decade later.
Everyone in the Renault world likes the r26r and trophy r but they mostly buy the normal Renault sport megane as they have to do a job not just be toys.  I'd think it will be a very similar reaction.
Suffering from a severe and unforgiving case of GTItis

Good point, even with Evo's gushing praise, Renault couldn't shift the R26R in the UK and had to send unsold cars back to France.
We all like a special GTI but what's the point of having one that is compromised for daily use/carrying passengers and yet is never gonna be a serious choice for track use?
Apparently they are going for the new front wheel drive 'ring record, no doubt at the expense of a lot of road usability.
