I changed last week and thought I was late. I was eager to get my 19s back on though. :P

Changed mine beginning of month back to summers. Then had to go to Arkengarthdale, near Barnard Castle , last week and hey ice and some snow. But took it gently and all ok. My wife runs her car on michelin alpins all year, as she has fields to go over, and muddy farm tracks ,and they give her much more secure  grip.I think you can run conti winter tyres all year .

Well last year I changed @ the end of March and got caught out by lower morning temps   So I kind of stuck it out this year, every time I think " time to change" the dam weather man says " 4-5 in the morning with a possibility of frost !!

Is there any real need for winters on an R ?  Thinking of changing myself to an R what's your opinion of it as an everyday car?  Mpg, comfort, etc

Noticed a difference on the wife's, my R has remained on normal rubber as the Polo is winter rubber equipped, four wheel drive doesn't defy physics

I looked at a whole host of cars for a daily when the Polo goes and in reality that is why initially i opted to keep mine but the daft estate lease deal means its going as 5 doors is better for me in terms of practicality

MPG is never a real concern or primary factor but wife is doing 420 miles on her commute of A roads in hers

... google 4 wheel drive myths. A 4 wheel drive car is no safer on snow and ice than a front wheel drive car on the same tyres.

4 wheel drive is of little use when cornering and braking on snow and ice. Though if you want to try power sliding round a corner on snow then it would be useful

There was a cold snap about this time last year. My mate could not get his car into his local garage for a MOT check. The garage was full of crashed 4x4s. They had 4 wheel drive traction to get them going. They just didn't have enough grip to stop them crashing!

I'm taking my winters of this evening. My wife will be taking her winter tyres off this weekend.

I changed mine a couple of weeks ago before they wore too much more. They have enough life for one more winter, meaning I will have got five winters use from them.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
