Golfs are best selling cars nowadays where as years ago they tended to be bought by slightly more discerning drivers and weren't even on company car lists for a lot of people.
So yes, with the leases and cheap PCP deals the world has moved on and there is more of a mix of idiots with generally very poor driving standards despite the driving test supposedly being harder than years ago.

Down here in the deep South West we're always 15 - 20 years behind everyone else anyway so my comments stand about BMW 320 drivers down this neck of the woods. I'll challenge any of you not to be convinced otherwise after a visit down this way!
That's before we get on to those that start driving in Cornwall and by the time they get to Exeter and the start of the motorway they have decided that only lorries go in the 'slow lane' and sit in the middle lane for the next two hours refusing to budge. 

I've always maintained everyone should be tested every five years and anyone caught using a mobile whilst driving should get an automatic ban. There are just so many people I see driving whilst on the phone or texting it's unreal and it's so easy for the police to prove. You're caught, you're banned. Just like that. Use your mobile to call a cab, you're walking for a month, get someone else to collect the car.
I work with 'professional drivers' and they get constantly brainwashed on safety yet the general public have absolutely no concept of how the physics of nature work with the increasingly huge lorries and will happily cut in front of them leaving no room for error. And I'm not defending lorry drivers either as I've come across all sorts in my time.

I know its childish but the simplest way to stop a tailgater is to slow right down (I don't mean brake test, just lift off the accelerator) - then drop it into 2nd/3rd and nail it!  Rinse and repeat until they give up. 

I find the best way (especially if they have a shiny car) is to give my windscreen several good washes. Doing what you suggest is just as stupid in my opinion. You'll spend more time looking in your mirror than the road ahead that you are accelerating into.

I will second Exonians comments.  I notice when we get a rare sunny day or when holiday season starts we get an influx of bad drivers taking lots of chances on our B Roads.  I don't like to discriminate, but it is Audi and BMW drivers more often than not.

I will 2nd that brembo I'm up n down the uk all wk about 2k miles in my truck and yes it'd nearly always a Bmw or Audi that does something stupid n dangerous although expected it still begets belief at times and no doubt they have had my horns a time or 100 lol

I would say Matchboys technique of handling tailgaters does work.  I have partaken in this method of dealing with tailgaters myself in the past.  We usually get holiday makers driving flash cars you never see in this neck of the woods any other time of the year riding on your back bumper and overtaking 5 or 6 cars a time on B roads where there are brows of hills and blind bends.  It is shear lunacy.  Even when another car is approaching on a country B road you see them deciding to push it to the last second and then when an accident is almost definitely about to happen they pull in the last second and live for another day...  I also have to say it is usually BMW & Audi drivers you see doing this....  Yet there is the odd occasion you also see an under powered wreck trying the same thing and when you see it, you most definitely start to prepare for the inevitable and drop right back from the car in front so you are not involved as well.

Been to my dealer today and had a test drive in a new Tiguan. Very refined and composed on the road and overall a very pleasant place to be. Digital dash is excellent and clarity very good. Didn't like the head up display, found myself having to crane my neck to see the display. Won't need to tick that box then !!  Full size electric panoramic roof is epic and sliding and reclining individual rear seats mean that even with the drivers seat adjusted to my liking I still had loads of leg room. Only down side was they didn't have a RLine on site. I went out in a SEL on 19" wheels.
Looks like I may have found what I will be having next 👍👍

Glad you were impressed with the Tiguan, thats the spec we've ordered to replace the GTI, a standard SEL with only the park assist and rear camera as well as dynaudio, we've gone for Indium grey. I popped in to Stourbridge VW last week who had a white R line awaiting prep but i must say i was pleasantly surprised at how good looking they are! The R line looks really aggressive in real life.

I've had a testdrive in a couple of 07 Mini coopers this weekend, one with very high spec but needs new rear discs and pads and also has an issue with jumping out if second gear, and another one with lower spec and a slipping clutch!

Gave a guy at mini works a call about the first ones gearbox who says it's quite a common problem with cars of that age and he's replaced a few "selectors" in the past, approx £300 for the part and an hrs labour, i've made an offer on it but they have another viewing booked so i doubt i'll get it tbh, it's been ages since i've driven a car without a turbo!
