Hello, newbie here, with a GTI arriving probably in early April; not got the build date yet.  Two questions: 1) have you found dealers co-operate with the "please don't prep it" request? (mine's coming via JCB in Gillingham) and 2) roughly what would it cost to get the car professionally detailed once I get it home, assuming JCB haven't prepped it?
Thanks, Bubba.

I got my car from JCB like a lot on here and they just literally pulled off the white protective sheets for me to prep it myself.
I'm ure some folk even asked for the protective sheets to be left on so that won't be a problem.

Bubba - my detailed talked about the plastic covering that cars are delivered in. Dealers rip them off and they quite often leave marks and glue residue. In the case of my R, the whole car was covered in swirls and scratches when seen under white light so it took a three day full paint correction to sort. This is 4 or 5 hundred quid's worth of work. A new car detail, assuming the dealer hasn't touched it, would be a lot less. However, it's worth every penny in my book to know a professional has done it, rather than some lads with buckets and would have the car prepped like that if I bought another new car.
Simon, yes the Passat is nearly a year old and has been spot on. Excellent car and excellent paintwork! The only possible gripe could be tyre wear - coming up to 12 000 miles and it needs a front set. Shame about your Mk2 - mine's just coming out of winter hibernation but needs a new exhaust and some gearbox work. Then onto some paintwork issues before show season starts. It's never ending. And even my engine bay needs some work as, two years later, things start to get tarnished and dull. Fortunately I've got an excellent body shop who know Mk2s well but they're not cheap and I don't have bottomless pockets. Think I'll do a few shows this year though, either in the R or the Mk2. Go take it for a drive bud and rekindle that flame!

You own a detailer and a body shop!? Awesome..

On a more serious note, which body shop is it? I'm in Huddersfield and looking for someone to blow in both rear quarters on my mk2. Ta

Thank you p3asa; anyone know who JCB use for prepping (I know I could just ask them, but wondered what people's experiences have been)?
Bubba.

They will just use the couple of guys they employ with buckets and sponges.
JCB don't do a big fancy unveiling. You get the handover in the car park so if I was you I would just ask them to leave the car unwashed and drive it to a detailer of your choice.

Nice R, I have a 3 door in Lapiz which is 3 months old. The paintwork on mine is covered in swirls and scratches. I don't recall them being there when i picked up the car and i've been really careful when washing it. Its disappointing, from looking at the web it seems like the colour is prone to it.
Also nice Mk2, it looks identical to my old one, the reg number doesn't end VNT does it ?

Cheers, I will do as you suggest; thanks.

Indeed. I've been to JCB a few times and seen it's all done by a guy in a small unit (shed) along by the edge of the car park. It doesn't look much, but to be fair I've not seen standard of clean that comes out of there.
However they've always been helpful and seemed pretty switched on, so there's no harm in asking.....

Wish I did own a detailer and a bodyshop Simeon!!

I use Impact at Brighouse who I'm sure you'll have heard of since you're only up the road in Huddersfield. The standard of work is excellent and I'm sure you could get stuff done cheaper but I suppose you get what you pay for.
O and no, the reg on the Mk2 doesn't end in VNT.

As for the paint on the R, my detailer said he'd done a few Rs. Also said the paint has quite often been orange peely and has, therefore, generally not been that impressed with the paint quality of these cars.
